what happened?

on wed i was doing some practice casting and trying to perfect the OTG, now it was a warm day with not to much wind. i was hitting some pretty big distances for me, not one birdie in an hours work, happy times. but today i arrived at the beach into a stiff southerly and first cast a crack off, i gradually regained confidence, keeping control on the spool with a couple of casts to about 100yd. finally when i felt i was ready to cast properly again, yet another crack off. could the wind be at cause or me, love to know any advise to prevent this happening too often. i use a conoflex source, abu premium mag, daiwa tournament 15lb, greased weasel 6olb and 150g lead. god im so inconsistent.

Hi Gazo,

I'm guessing that the Mags were full on? Casting "hard" into a stiff breeze can be very difficult. At the start of the cast the lead moves quickly and so does the spool. As the wind slows the lead down the spool keeps going quickly (this is why you need full mags) If the lead slows too much, as it does when the breeze is into your face, the spool starts to overrun and you get loose loops of line on the spool. This is the start of the birdie.... Once these loops catch each other, you normally get a crack off. One way of avoiding this is to use a little thumb control to slow the spool a little as it starts to fluff...... You could also try to cast a little lower into the wind..... Heavier oil in the bearings might help again.

had my fist crack off in over a year last week it was very windy and i noticed afterwards that the mag slider had accidentaly been set to 0 when setting up (got line and terminal gear back 1/2 an hour later wrapped around the my gripper) it pays to check setting before every cast just in case :oops:

when in the cast was it snapping?

about mid-way as far as i can remember.

midcast crack off is usually to little brakes , if you ever notice your line starting to lift(or fluff) it is about half way through the cast as the lead starts to slow but the spool is still giving line ,the wind was slowing the lead quicker than normal hence your crack off
