Report: My brother in law came down for his annual solitary fishing visit. Started the session off well with the bass about 14 to 15 inches so undersize and returned. He of course being the jammy git that he is caught it. I followed with double shots of flounder, some were a decent size and then he again managed to produce a plaice about 10/11 inches long.
Then I got the codling which was about a pound and a half in weight. Thebeach was fishing well and I was convinceed with teh surf running we were going to get bass as we had some monstrous rag worm compliments of the new tackle shop in Gorey.
Into the second hour of the session and my rod gave a good bite followed by a good shaking so I struck into a good fish. This was too close in I thought and too early for a smoothie so I was convinced I had my bass. I again had to give line as the fish ran so I switched off the anti reverse on the reel to ensure I landed my bass.
Sure enough after a good scrap I saw the flash of silver in the breaker in front of me as the fish turned on his side and headed off on a run parallel to the beach. I then managed to almost beach it and got a good look at the size of it when I had it in shallow water but as the next wave hit the fish turned and shot back into the sea with its tail flicking half way out of the water this bass was powering to get away. I eventually beached it only to discover that my silver fish was actually a MULLET? I couldn't believe it. Don't get me wrong I was actually delighetd to add a new species to my belt but i just couldn't believe I got one off a Wexford beach and fishing with a three hook flapper using Rag as bait. Anyone else encountered a Mullet off Clones before?
