suitable kayak.

i have had my kayak for all of two months, when i bought it i thought i'd only use it for sightseeing but now i'd like to go fishing in too. my kayak is a 12ft sit perception dancer. obviously fishfinders and gps systems are a no no due to its design but is there any reason why i could not fit a rod holder and some other necessities.

Hi Gazo,

Can't see any reason why you couldn't spin or fly-fish from it, and as for rod holders the flush ones may not suit as you may not have the clearance needed inside the hull but a set of Scotty or RAM rod holders fitted to the out side of the canoe should do the trick for you. They would cause a bit of drag when trying to right ur self from a dunk in, just something to bear in mind. Would be interested to hear how it goes.

thanks for the reply, got a rod holder, paddle holder and fly box screwed onto it, took it out for a spin a fews days ago and got a couple of small Pollock on the fly rod, the kayaks balance wasn't compromised at all. will post up a picture of it as soon as.

Great to see ya taken an interest in kayak fishing, looking forward to some of ur photo's and chat,

Here's one of my biggest pollack to date 8lb odd. Not on the fly rod though just jigging a lead head, would have been magic on the fly rod.

you could get a handheld waterproof gps for it, like a garmin gps 76 we have one on our little punt and all you need to mount it is a cheap marine mount and some screws

we also have a waterproof fish finder that is totally portable attaches with a suction cup and is powered by aa batteries so its very light and tansportable. i think its an eagle cuda100 or a humminbird, may be wrong will check at home

yeah its a piranha 215 we have,

they are decent enough but i dont trust the fish alarm. we have been on shallow lakes looking in ten feet of crystal clear water with no fish and the alarm is showing loads of fish (picking up weed strands?), and vice versa sitting on a shoal of bream and its showing nothing (silt in the water making the signal?), good for depths but not for fish finding.

oh ps put a safety line on the finder, if you roll they cup may not be enough to hold it on and it could all sink.

the 215 seems to be waterproof , but not totally immersion proof, but we have had ours totally immersed and after 3 days in the hotpress with some silica gel it resumed normal function fine

i have the suction cup mount, you just attach the suction cup to the outside of the boat just below the water line and tilt the head so the transducer face is pointing straight down.
