Killiney, Sorento terrace and white rock. SWFF 25/7/07

#1 Post by deno »

People: Myself

Duration: 6.30am - 8.15am (early bird)

Tide: Nearly full

Weather: Partially cloudy skies, slight south westerly breeze and about a 1-1.5ft swell running from the south.

Bait: Blue/white and Green/white deceivers

Rigs: 9wt forward weight line with ultra fast sinking braided leader, roughly 10 ft of 9lb cast.

Results: 8 Pollack

Catch and Release:: Yes

Report: Don't have much time during the day for fishing so I figured I would get out early before I had to go "work". It looked promising from the offset and I decided I would try the flooded rocky area 300yards south of white rock diving platform as suggested by gazo. On retrospect the fishing conditions where far from ideal !! In fact I had to give up. The rocky area was completely covered as it was nearly high water and there was a shore break of about maximum 2 foot directly onto the beech/rocks therefore I couldn't try and wade. "I would have been dumped on my head by the water". However, the wave was the least of my problems. It was the weed that made me walk away. To use the term impenetrable might not be far off. Not only did the fly collect everything in a 10 meter radius but the loop to loop join of the fly line to the sinking leader seemed a mecca for weed. See photo below. Needless to say I moved on. Just so I wasn't going home with a blank I popped down to the nudists below sorento for some quick pollack bashing. As expected they did not disappoint and I caught eight fish within the half hour. It was a nice mornings fishing although I do have one grievance that I would like to make.

I arrived to the area below sorento this morning to find the area heavily littered with rubbish. I have previously fished this make on a few occasions and have never seen any rubbish. I know for a fact that it was people fishing, as the rubbish I picked up was full of discarded packets from fishing paraphernalia. Including large balls of discarded fishing line wedged into cracks in rocks. I now understand why the swimmers don't want people fishing down there because quite simply people who fish can be pigs. It doesn't make any sense that people go to the trouble of putting their rubbish in a bag and then leaving it there. Who do they think is going to take it away? This area has been seldom fished by the "masses" and if by advertising the specific marks in my other posts on this web site I am in some way increasing the level of rubbish in the area and decreasing its potential for other users (swimmers). I will refrain from specifically pointing out where people can catch fish.

Sorry for the rant but "littering fishing pigs" make my blood boil!

Nice fishing there,

I agree on the rubbish bit, it gets me too how people can get out and enjoy the same past time as me yet not see that their littering is a problem.

An essential anytime I go fishing is to bring a roll of bin bags, 1 for potential catches to keep them away from the bait in the coolbag, but more essentially 2 for putting rubbish in, I mean when you're leaving it's a lot lighter so why not pack it back in the bag? I'd be guilty of dropping the odd bit of line trimmed off a tag but never metres of the stuff like you see at some marks you go to.

I disagree on PM'ing locations, that makes the report section as good as useless.
It's been debated a few times on here about not giving out marks.

that really annoys me :evil: people should just stop being apathetic and clean up after themselves :!:im forever cleaning up after anglers on killiney beach sorry to here about whiterock, i often wade out to a rock post, which would be perfect for fly fishing as it gives you a decent amount of room to cast, but as you said it was dangerous to wade. i might be popping down this saturday evening, deno if you want to meet up.

Hi gazo, thanks for the invite but unfortunatly I have other obligations that I cant skip on saturday evening. Maybe sometime soon we can meet up and you can point out this rock post that you can wade to.
