Dun Lougheire East Pier,22/07

#1 Post by rapalajoe »

People:Me and Yeoh

Duration:6 hrs

Tide:In coming/out going

Weather:raining

Bait:spinner and softies/jelly

Rigs:

Results:2 mac,a few pollack,1 pollack (24 inches,6.6lbs) and 1 wrasse(12 inches)

Catch and Release:: Keep the mac and the biggest pollack.

Report:Went to dun lougheire today to have some fun on the mac.Its raining when we arrived.Try spinning for a mac, fail to catch any.Try spinning and jigging with a fw grub softies.Got a few small pollack, then suddently it when quiet.Moved to the end of pier, got a strike from a nice fighting wrasse.Released the fish and move again to the first wall on the first bent.A nice 24 inches pollack whack my softies and its give me a good fight.the best ever fight that i ever get from this species because it was hooked at long distance. The fish swallow all the 2 inches softies.Found a lots of finger size shrimp when gutted it.Just wonder,is it possible to get any live or local fresh one for bait???Quite a surprise that this place have potential to produce such a nice size pollack. The bad thing is i leave the camera at home and the only photo is in friends phone.

there used to be a great head of big pollack on the east pier up and over double figures, there rarer now because most times when one was caught it was kept unfortunately.

Never intended to waste the pollack...thats why i kept it.It wont survive if i released it yesterday. It swallow the whole 2 inch grub and deep hooked on the throat,i am just lucky that my 12 lb leader not break due to the fish abrasive teeth.I still thinking that it possible to save it if its hooked somewhere else or on the gill rake,i can see only a part of my 1/2 oz jig head with all the 4/0 pass thro' the throat.I f i never think bout the future of our sport, why should i release the wrasse??Many people say that it not a nice fish to eat,but if well prepared it will make a nice things on the plate, for the ppl that ever eat any wrasse or other kind of it like parrot fish will know it.Yeah i do agree with you bout angler pressure on that place and most of the time they will keep the fish, even the smaller ones.Cheeerss....

Tried the east pier myself last saturday for first time. Didnt catch anything :( Saw people with bags of mackerel on way out. Think i got there too late. Do the tides make much difference or do you just have to keep moving to find the mackerel?

I start fishing on the afternoon that day,and no single mac i saw taken on that time by other angler. When the water start to going out in the evening i start to get 2 mac and saw others that using feathers catching them.It seems that the school of mac start to come in near shore in the evening. In the afternoon, you can sea sometimes a boil in the distance,a birds diving and a boat taking them in the distance out of your casting range. As for the big fish like pollock and wrasse, most of them are just near by from the shore,in the kelp and drop off.The problem is just to get your lure in the kelp and avoid snagging and the weed.I found out using jellies hooked weedless is the only way, spinner is out of question cause it easily get snag each time u tried to get them as close to the structure and sea bed.I believe theres a lots of monster pollock out there, but not many people are after them, and most of them turn off by a snag and lost of lure.Saw one guy got line strip off his spool by a biggy few weeks a go and the line snapp half way of the fight.

Yeh I found it very snaggy too. Still better than the end of the west pier. Lots more space and you dont have to duck everytime someone casts.

Theres a lots kind of people including the one that is considerable to other ppl around them and the one that never think before doing things. This also happened here in east pier especially at the end of the pier.Theres people that will telling you that u cant fish in certain place cause they want to fishing the spot and at the same times they re fishing 15 yrds from the place. For me,i always back off and just find another place to avoid getting into trouble.Theres also people that will ask you why u re releasing the fish.I saw one time ,one angler got quite a nice size of doggie, theres a few kids around that ask him for the fish.He give them a fish, the dogie ends up being tortured by the kids, slam to the wall, being throw a round and at the end just being thrown back to the sea floating after they guys took off.The casual angler that just get their tackle set from lidl and try to learn to do side cast rather than over head with 3 oz of sinker with verry low lb test line in place that pack with other angler.I always choose to go near the rocky parts as its will always produce nice fish and not many ppl will fish the place due to snag.
