South Co. Wicklow beach

#1 Post by Seaniebo »

People: Just me

Duration: 20.00 00.30

Tide: ? ebbing and flowing ?

Weather: gentle south easterly, mostly dry

Bait:Sandeel crab and rag

Rigs: 3 Hook clipped

Results: 2 pup tope, 8 dogs, 1 flounder, 10 dabs, 4 codling, 4 whiting, 2 starry smoothound, 2 homelyn ray, 1 cuckoo ray (possibly?)

Catch and Release:: Yes

Report:

Headed south for the evening to keep out of trouble and was rewarded with a good auld session! Kept busy all night with fish coming in at a fair pace. Nice not to be over-run by dogs for a change.
Best smoothie was 5lb 3oz
Best ray was 3lb
Best codling was about a pound.
Dabs and whiting were decent enough by east coast standards.

Does anyone know if the smaller ray in the pic is a cuckoo. Reckon its a spotted with a weird pattern myself but just wondering if anyone knows for sure. Thanks

That sounds like a cracking session sean ,and its possibly a cuckoo ray ,just immature and the wing spots haven't developed fully yet ,looks like you've found your east coast ray spot
If someone shows you a mark to fish, respect it and dont pass it of as one of your own, dont tell every man and his dog about it.

Sean - that's a cuckoo ray all right. Yellow brown back, single large black spot overlaid with yellow scribbling and the heart shaped wing. Nice fish.

Hi Sean,

What bait did the ray fall to. I'd love to get something other than thornback. I'm fair jealous.
