Downloading charts....

#1 Post by petekd »

Does anyone know if I can download charts from my laptop (I have a copy of Tsunamis) onto a memory card for use in my Garmin 178 chartplotter/GPS set up or directly onto it even? Would be handy if I could and would save buying a card.

Hi Pete,

Unfortunately not, Garmin have it well secured.

I recently bought the regular Bluechart card for £99 sterling from Redcar Marine in the UK. I was quoted €265 here locally it is the same card that is used in the 178C. It covers from Cahersiveen right up to Lough Swilly or roughly 2/3 of Ireland.

Charts

Garmin have it sown up tighter than a fish's bum :)

Choices are:
Get a copy of Mapsource and purchase unlock codes for the regions you want. If you have a card reader or cable to connect the gps to your pc then you can then write the charts to the card. You can register only two gps's to your mapsource and the written card will only work in your gps. You can work on your waypoints etc. in mapsource and transfer points between pc and unit/unit and pc.

Buy the chart for your area already written to a card.
