Hi Kissafish i cant tell you exactly but it is OLD as far as i can remember a friend bought a new Mercury back in the early nineties and it was a red band. i would guess it is from the eighties.

The age of the engine is not as important as the condition.
How well has it has been serviced ?
Has it been used in fresh or salt water ?
What type of use did it get ?
Was it on a big or small boat ?

At the end of the day if you have bought it then you need to get it serviced by a good Marine Mechanic and he will be able to let you know whats the story

Good luck and tight lines

The original red bands were actually before the blue band, it is a very old engine if it is the old wrap around cowl, late 70s I would guesstimate. Always very hard to start from cold, if you used the choke too much.
Smoking for the weekend!

Cheers
Brian
