Squid would be a better substitute. Smooth hounds don't have teeth like shark, their dentition is more like a ray

(damn tyops! :) )

was thinkin that, might start off casting out 3hook flappers wit a mac head, peeler, and a squid...see what takes there fancy . have caught dogs and red cod on heads before but on both occasions they didnt seem to be very well hooked on them

Depends on the size of mack head but they usually need a single big hook to be presented correctly. I'd only ever use them when after larger fish. A good way to present them so the likes of dogs can still be hooked up is to cut them half from the top of the head. Their still not the most aerodynamic of baits but can get a bite when all else fails and are crab resistent. For small fish half heads tied to the lead work very well as an attractant.

Only fish Ennereilly very occasionaly but I wouldn't be without sand eel here.As the lads said squid seems to be an alright crab subsistitue. Its definately has given me good returns when fish are spewing up crab here in the Estuary.
