WHAT IS A IMPELLOR?

HI CHAPS.
This may seem a stupid question to all you sea dogs.
But i am trying to buy my first boat and outboard. And some of the ad's that have viewed have stated that the outboard has had a new impellor at the last service.
Is it like a water pump in a car?
