The rays will take squid as well Martin just not today ,i usually whip it on and give it a dose of pilchard or mackerel oil.
I like to fish it with the tide running off about 100 yds to the right of the breakwater, just watch your lines with the boats coming up and down the channel one of the lads was cut off twice this morning .neeedless to say he wasn't happy as he had a fish on 1 of the times

i fished the beach the night before and had a few bites on the sandeels but i have a feeling it was just the craps playing around with it

Boys, at low water (when youse are fishing for rays off the beach) the channel that runs into the marina runs VERY close to the shore. When we're in a boat we have no choice but to come in close along the channel, otherwise we'll run aground.

It's not done intentionally, it's just bad luck where the channel runs...

Irish shamrock we had about a dozen boats of various sizes pass by without any problems as we dropped the rod tips to allow them to pass over without being cut off by the props.the ones that cut the guys lines were small boats that came so far in they stood a fair chance of running aground on the shore, but there's always a few assholes who think its a laugh, Rathmullen pier on any weekend for example with the jet skiers and speedboat owners.

the water runs very fast into the marina there. i think the deep channel starts around where the black marker is. i was using 8oz grip weights and they still got pulled away.

Yes Christina there is a hell of a current in the channel when the tide is just starting to run off, its bad with weed too until it slackens off a bit.

I was up there last night but had to fish off the breakwater as the tide was just turning out .
couldn't hold the bottom with 6 ozs i'm thinking of trying an 8ozs fixed wire next time.
i agree with you as regards fishing down around the black marker though it's nowhere near as strong down there i was using watch leads on Sunday with no problems.
Btw no fish for me last night i ended up with a broken tip ring after the first cast so packed up after an hour or so  ,the lad i was with though had a 7 1/2 lbs ray on the first cast.

naw i had none either, why dont you give the gemini sinkers a go the 5 and 6oz ones come with better grip wires than the breakaways, thats what i use when on a venue with a striong tide run.
