Leenan pier, co Donegal

#1 Post by MC »

People:just me

Duration:9pm to 3am

Tide:flooding, i think

Weather:nice until 2am then wind and rain

Bait:prawn, mackeral and sandeel

Rigs:2 hook bomber and pulley

Results:2xLSD, 1x flounder,1xsliver eel and 1x thornback ray

Catch and Release:: Yes

Report: the wife wanted to do the house work so she chased from the house and was told to go fishing, wish this happened every day. so 15minutes later i was on my way to leenan. the pier was busy but i got a spot and ended up next to jonboy, while chatting to him i got a knock and in came the first dogie of the night. i was out to catch something on my diawa supercast rgm as i have used it twice and blanked, but when i was unhooking the dogie the supercast got a knock and in came a flounder.After that it all went quiet, on the fishing front, the pier got busy with some lads conger fishing. Sometime later john left as he has work in the morning, so i keep on fishing and had a bit of craic with the lads fishing for conger, they where good lads down to beat pbs. Anyway i landed another dogie then a sliver eel which bugger up my trace so i packed away the rod, when i came back the diawa tip gave a rattle and then a steady pull and i lifted into what would be a pb ray, its the biggest i had and it was about 5lb+, not bad for my third ray and my first shore caught one. The bites dried up for me but the lads going for conger got one strap and lost one double figure fish at the steps after it did a death roll and nipped the wire trace. All in all not a bad trip for being a spur of the minute get out of the wifes way trip.

PS don't ask how i got kicked out to go fishing as i am still trying to work it out.

I have only fished off Leenan pier once before, and could only manage a few 1lb+ coalies, did you cast far off the pier or did you stay close in?
I've been told by a guy that I work with from Clonmany that not far out from the pier there is a deep channel, but I didnt notice it the evening I fished it? He also reckons the pier fishes best when the boats are coming back in!

was casting out about 100yrds+ and inching the baits back every 5 minutes and most bites came at about 40 to 50 yards out, as for being sent fishing by the wife, i am still trying to figure it out and the only thing i can think of is she had something to hide( married 6years this friday)
