Slea Head & Ventry 22 Apr.

#1 Post by Tomaszek »

People: Me and mate

Duration: 17:30 - 22:30

Tide:flood

Weather:a bit rainy a bit windy

Bait:mackerel

Rigs:2 and 1 hooked flappers + spinning lures (wobler & rubber on jig head)

Results:4 x dogfish, 2x bull huss (I guess) 1x pollock 1x wrasse

Catch and Release:: Yes

Report:
My mate took me this time to the venue that takes my breath away - Slea Head cliffs. While I was standing still shocked  by the scenery he already managed to catch a pollock
Image
Than I got my gear running and I had a bite but fish managed to escape along with my lure. Than again my mate cought a wrasse
Image

After that time fishes stop to bite so we decide to move on to Ventry (my mate says - fish go away - there is no use to stay here any longer - I'm still learning to fish in Ireland so I agree - If you think different - please let me know ;))

At Ventry we managed co catch a number of dogfises and two bull husses - please correct me if I'm wrong but I think it's a bull huss by the large spots on his body.
Image

And finally I catch a flounter on a spinning lure!

Any comments are welcome

dogfish or bull huss

#2 Post by kieran »

Hi

First nice report, well done.
Always a problem telling a doggie from a small bull huss, reckon it is a doggie. You need to check the nasal area to be clear as to which you have caught. Check http://www.fishbase.org or http://www.cfb.ie for help

Time spent fishing is never time wasted...

2015 targets - a triggerfish, a specimen bass, a three bearded rockling to complete the set and something big and toothy from certain north Mayo deep water marks

Nice fishing, fair play. The doggie/huss certainly has distinctive markings, looks great.

So you think it's a doggie or huss? There is another photo

I started to doubt myself that it's a huss - after seeing couple of pictures of bigger ones - so you guys think it's a doggie?

Definately a doggy. Huss have larger spots and are stocky even the small ones. The key indicator is huss have 2 distinct nostril flaps from the mouth. Check the fish id book on the http://www.cfb.ie site.

Very cool to see the Flounder hit the crankbait and very nice fish.

Over here in Southern California, we catch Halibut off the shore with those kinds of lures all the time. I guess it would make sense that Flounder would hit them as well :)
