Just wondering if anyone has any data on which of the two species should be granted more protection. I would have thought sea trout but unsure. if anyone has any info i'd appreciate it.

Very little data on either species AFAIK... sea trout abundance is a very localised affair - e.g. in Connemara they were virtually wiped out, making a slight comeback now in a couple of rivers (close to a bay where, by pure coincidence  , they are no longer farming salmon), but still close to extinction anywhere near salmon farms. In other areas stocks are still healthy, e.g. Lough Currane in Kerry gets a run of 20,000+ sea trout.
Both species have some protection - the bass byelaw - 2 fish limit, and in the western fisheries region the sea trout byelaw (mandatory C&R)
Its called fishing, not catching. If it was called catching it wouldn't be fishing!

one thing with sea trout is that due to the fact they breed in fresh water, this makes them quite vunerable to over exploitation tru netting, as well as pollution.other enviromental problems such as drought and poor water quality can also have a detrimental on reproduction

Tnks for the info guys, much appreciated.
Seems they have it harder than bass.
One of the reasons I wanted to know is one of the marks I will be fishing next week in Kerry holds a good few of them this time of year and on this basis I will not fish it.
(It holds good bass to but dems the breaks)
