not sure of any definite spots but if you keep an eye on the reports youll see where they might be about, iv always used a lure that resembles a sandeel in sum way or actually jigged a dead sandeel itself, least they might pick up a bit of scent that way too... never used a plug so dont no much about that

Hi,

Rod wise 9 - 11ft spinning rod casting 30 - 60grams is about the standard. Prefer something with a bit of length, have an 11ft Daiwa Samurai S myself.

Reels would generally be fixed spools around the 4000 size loaded with 10 - 12lb mono or similar braid if you prefer.

All standard spinners/plugs work. Favour surface poppers and walk the dog lures for alot of my bass fishing just because it's such an exciting way of fishing, had some good results on small storm shads for bass last summer. Some fav lures....

Yo-Zuri Mag Popper (Black/Gold)
Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnow
Storm Chug Bug (Black for after dark)

28g Abu Tody
28g Dexter Wedge

Bubble float & small eddystone eel (purple/white) cheap & deadly!

For those using braided line with a length of mono when spinning/plugging, how much and what diameter/strength of mono do you use. Also what knot, uni-to-uni? I've been trying the peixet knot:

http://www.pescamediterraneo2.com/foros ... topic=9264

They claim near 100% strength and has been extensively and sucessfully tested. It certainly is easy to tie!

I've heard nylon is better than fluorocarbon (too stiff) for knots and I'm a total beginner with them, so I thought I'd start with nylon. Any particular brands?

Cheers

Thanx for the tips guys.....

Btw,other than spinning reels.....izzit possible to use baitcaster? Any of you guys out there using a baitcaster for bass spinning?? Just curious....i prefer using a baitcaster set up for my lure fishing.Maybe using my abu with 11ft berkley SSg rods. The top water aplication is superb compare to the other lure aplication....do this mean that the bass more attracted to the more noisy lure??

Inigo....
For me ,usually i double the poundage of the leader.Letsay u re using 10lb braided, then the leader will be 20 lb mono or fc.The length will be the same length of my rod,and a little bit extra so that i can wound it for a few in my spool.I prefered fc for my leader due to more abrasion resistant compare to mono.Fc tend to sink faster compare to mono.

Theres 2 things that i consider for the knot that i want to use for my leader.
-the knot must be low profile as possible to pass my guide ring without dampen my cast.
-the knot must be strong enuff;in any condition or stress, the knot wont fail,i prefer the mainline fail or my leader fail rather than having my knot fail.

My favourite knot,a bit difficult to tied, but strong enuff and the most low profile knot.

The easier knot.

The esiest braid leader knot.

Braid and knots and fluoro / Mono

#6 Post by JimH »

.........Braid has no stretch so there is a unique experience in fish and lure contact. This allows you to control your lure in ways that monofilament never can. When fishing with braid I would recommend that you use a short length of clear mono of fluorocarbon of about one metre at the end of your line. Make the drop your normal length without allowing the knot to travel over the tip ring. Constant retrieving over the tip ring will destroy the knot and it will open. The mono allows for a little shock absorption when striking fish and prevents wear and tear on the braid from a lure and its hooks or when fishing in rocky areas. Powerpro, spiderwire, Dynacable are all good brands of braid that work really well. When using new braid take it easy with casting at first until you ‘break it in’ over one or two sessions. It is prone to knotting at first but these will soon disappear......

FWIW the knot i use most frequently is the allbright
I never use a swivel of any kind - sometimes a small link clip
The mono i use is Gamma Competition
The fluoro i use is Rio Fluroflex Plus or Gamma Competition Fluorocarbon.

Hi,

Don't like a long leader when light line fishing over rough ground especially because the leader knot is now a potential weakpoint. On a more trivial note it will restrict distance to some degree if this knot is coming off the spool when casting.

My preference is to have a 3 - 4ft length of mono with a link swivel on one end and a swivel on the other. I tie the braid/mono directly onto this swivel. The mono provides abrasion resistance from rocks, acts as some sort of a cushion for braid plus the braid to swivel knot is a stronger connection and is outside the rod when casting

This is the real profile of mid knot that i use.Its actually used by japanese deep sea jigger and for poping for a giant dog tooth tuna and giant trevally. If u got it right, theres no way of the knot will fail and i never hav an isue with this knot. What happened when i test it is either the mainline will fail or the leader will snap. The downside with it is that it a bit complicated to tie and need a lot of practice. Its the smoothest knot that will pass thro your guide that i know.

I prefer a bit long leader to prolong the life of my braid. The problem using swivel for me is that it some times will smack on your tip guide if not carefull enuff and will dampen the swimming action and presentation specially if large size swivell being use specially on top water.Just my 2 cent.....cheerss...

Thanks for the info!

Rapalajoe, sorry I seem to have hijacked your thread  Perhaps we could set a forum for lure fishing exclusively?

3-4 ft seems to be the standard with Spanish pluggers/spinners too, the most common braided being PowerPro 20 lbs, 0.4-0.5 mm Seaguar in fluorocarbon, Teklon Gold or Gibertini UC-4 (?) in nylon. Knots the peixet above, uni-to-uni, bimini and albright. Some use braided directly to the lure. Some had problems with the fluorocarbon because of its rigidity and use nylon instead.

I'm afraid I'll damage the tip ring if I use a swivel or the knot if I pass it through the rings as well as hinder the cast as it's been well said.

Rapalajoe, those look like complicated knots!! I'm only just starting, can barely manage a palomar....

So I'll try different lengths and knots and see how I get on.

Any tips/PMs on those marks around Dublin for bass or anything else really that rapalajoe was asking about would be appreciated

rapallajoe/nialler

not much experience of plugs myself but a couple of years ago I picked up a few £1 each cheap plugs made in China off a market stall. Went to SW Scotland and things got slow so put one of the smaller ones which was a black and green marked sub-surface plug on. Fished it behind a small bullet on a flowing trace and although nothing big it was getting nailed cast after cast by small pollack and coalies. Made me more convinced about trying different lures when nothing happening.
