Abu 6500C levelwind conversion

At the suggestion of various members and given the magazines will run a mile from criticising a piece of kit, here is your chance to tell us what you really think about a rod, reel, line, lure... keep it legal please!

Abu 6500C levelwind conversion

#1 Post by Bradan »

OK, I got an Abu 6500c recently, the classic model I think, no mag brakes or anything fancy. It was levelwind, so I got a conversion kit and fitted that, but when I put the reel back together the spool seems to move a lot more (lateral movement, from one sideplate to the other)

Have I done something wrong or is this a bad thing? Or am I imagining that it moves more now???
Its called fishing, not catching. If it was called catching it wouldn't be fishing!

If you removed the cog from the spool that drives the level wind during the conversion that will be causing the problem. It needs to be there to take up the space from the spool side to the bush the spindle sits in. A spacer is avail as an extra for tournament conversions but if its for fishing you shouldnt need to worry just put it back in. This is presuming its an ultracast model were the spool houses the bearings and sits on spindle.

If its not the above check the end float cap/caps and make sure they are screwed down so as to center the spool in the cage and give the slightest wee bit of end float when you move the spool side to side.
