Favorite Casting Reels

Which reels do u prefer, what can cast and retain fishability and user friendlyness!!! pretty much narowed down to 2 for me...the Abu mag elite and the Penn supermag...what about ye?

By far abu. They cast well(very well) don't need a whole lot of maintenance and you can fish with them anywhere. i have even used mine at ballyreen :D close second is the 7ht but that requires a bit more maintenance and isn't quite as robust.

7ht turbos are class but have to say i dont bother with mines unless im fishing duing the day always ends up as an affro wen fishing at night! as for penns well i have never got on with them found them very unforgiving :evil: and found myself continualy using bad lanugage when using them..so thanks abu ill be buying another :lol: :lol:

I have the sports mag and a penn... the two are very nice but it would have to be the abu great little reel!

im an abu man myself...very nice lookin reels aswell may i add...at the risk of sounding gay, i love the colours :lol:

Bit of a tricky one this :lol:

Casting - Abu 5500/6500 mag

Fishing - Penn 525 Mag/Supermag followed by the 7HT's and Abu's

The 525 is pretty much bombproof as a fishing reel ( very strong construction ), followed by the 7HT and bringing up the rear in terms of construction is the Abu 6500's. The one thing that lets the 7HT down is it's small handle which can be a pain when reeling in weed or a decent fish ( though a power handle from an Abu or the improved handle from the 7HT Turbo can be fitted ).

For anyone wishing to make the move from fixed-spool to multiplier I would always recommend the original 7HT - they are the most forgiving reel out there and are available at very sensible prices.

The only problem i have with the mag series(Penn) is that they are so heavy compared to abu or daiwa. this may not matter to alot of ppl but me being small and weak it makes a difference.

Said Abu, Got a Chrome Rocket, Lovely bit of kit. Saying that, I'm seriously thinking of trying to pick up an Original 7ht, Nice reel for the money.

Yep, Abu's are great casting reels, the 5500/6500 Mag elites are good, but i also like the 6500 C3CT Elite (Blue one, no magnets only centrifugal braking).

The original 7HT's are good too, and as said the handles are small, but an Abu Power handle solves that.
Hairy, you can get Abu Power handles on Ebay for about £12.
Have to agree with Lee that i would also recommend the 7HT for someone starting out with multipliers, its what i started with many years ago.

The 525 is a pretty much bombproof fishing reel, and casts well too.

For heavier shore fishing the Daiwa Slosh 30 is a good reel but some have a problem casting them, as they can be a bit lively.

Mine started off alright, then she seemed to speed up, had to Turn her over from 25lb + Leader to 35lb Straight Through, Seems to have sorted the Problem :D

For clean beach work and casting the ABUS's win hands down. Very easy to maintain also. You can stip, clean and grease one inside 20 mins.

For fishing over mixed/rough ground, the Penn 525 is streets ahead - mainly due to the retrieval speed. This reel still casts well though.

Head to head for casting though - the ABU's just scrape it....

Abus are the better casting reel but are a pain when bringing in a weight. Yesterday I fished a mag elite bringing 6 oz over a sand bank which was serious tough work. When I switshed back to my 525s in the end the difference was huge. I found abus finicky on being disassembled compared to my 525. The old 7ht is very tame but that bloody handle shouldn't be sold with it for beach fishing. I know it can be switched but why should we have to do this for daiwa. I've heard of the gears on 7hts getting stripped using a power handle bring in big weights.

One other thing the 525 has over the 6500 and 7ht is it has a lever anti reverse. The push button ones let is salt and grit and can be flicked on by mistake.
