lads in my the gear is crap i bought a rod and reel for my daughter to my eternal shame and it didnt last 1 session. youd be better off looking at e-bay you often see stuff going especially reels for the same price and there usually better quality.

There is a difference between cheap and value for money and this stuff is less than cheap.

I think even to even put a link to it on this forum degrades and cheapens SAI as a serious angling site :(

It sadens me to think that these twigs could be recommended to new anglers, it would put them off angling for life

i don't think using rods or gear from lidl or any other cheap gear degrades or cheapens SAI one bit,i am sure most lads on the site started off with cheap rods and reels and a lot of them are still using them, the first rod and reel i bought for sea angling cost me 40 euro and that was 5 years ago and i am still using the reel made by inter sport to this day and never had any problem with it,i never washed it after a session or never gave it a drop of oil and it still going strong even pulled huss over 10 lbs with it

one good thing about the cheap gear is that it great for starting kids or even adults into fishing, where i work we often get tourist that would like to try the sea fishing and i give them the cheap rods and tell them a mark and let them off and i wont worry if they damage the rods, would be a different story if i gave them the century rods and they were damaged   i also write down this web site for them and tell them they can get all the information about fishing they need here

SAI is a serious angling site but it also has to encourage new anglers to the site, whether they use a €15.99 lidl rod or a €400 Zziplex , i started as a new angler on the site in 2008 and have gained a lot of great information from it

who knows maybe a future world champion from SAI will have started off fishing with a lidl rod from the link above

here,here, i second that.

Well theres one thing for sure when hes crowned world champ he wont be using lidl crap  .

lidl gear does exactly what it says on the tin.i have 2 of the boat sets on the boat to give to my children when were out fishing. if it gets snagged and goes overboard big deal its 50 yo yo,s gone .opposed to somthing that might cost me hundreds to replace i have to say though i took in a good sized huss on one of the rods and it worked fine.pity it wasent one of these i lost instead of the shimano that took a tumble

The rods may not be up to much but there are some good bargins with the rest of the tackle.
I picked up a bunch of stuff there this morning:
50 starlights for €3.99 - you cant beat that?
Box of various hook for €8.99- their hooks arn't bad - better than a lot of other brands (I still remember loosing a monster bass last year a few yards from the shore because a hook broke - from an online tackle dealer)
Box of assorted weights for €8.99
Box of soft plastic shads fior €9.99
Box of various soft plastic lures with lead heads for €9.99
Box of assorted lures for €9.99 - maybe not the greatest lures but fine for fishing for pollock in snaggy ground where you dont want to loose a high tech €25 Japanese lure.
Cod season Winter 2013/14: 117 cod (best fish: 6.5 lbs)
Cod season Winter 2014/15: 193 cod (best fish: 4.25 lbs)

Is the float set worth getting for value for money or would I be better off getting a couple in the tackle shop?

I have Lidl reels 3 years old still working perfectly, Have a 3 year old pike rod still going strong I use for everything, I broke a beach caster in the car door it was perfect up to that. The boat reels are no good. Excellent starter gear for that price, the end tackle boxes are a bargain. If your into distance casting obviously its not the gear for you, how would it be, same debate 3 years on........

The starlite are great and if you freeze them at the end of each session, they can be used and used until the chemicals inside are burned out.

I'm a cheapskate so the lidl stuff fills up a space, the night lights, shads jelly worms, line with clippers and cheapish lures i dont mind losing as much as a 15euro lure, and dont forget the weights.
as for the red andnd white diving lure they had before but not anymore:( it was just another lure in the set but one of the best, weird random action, but worked on various fish.
with the set of hooks you also get some trebles, these i replaced on my sea lures and have noticed they dont rust too bad, usualy wash my gear after anyways, but the waders and rods seemed dodgy alright.
some things out there were grand for the price, others are best left on the shelf
my first post i think but visitied here a few times for boards.ie
thanks:)

I agree with you on this one, I started with a cheap beach caster and okuma impact reel. never looked after it and its still going good after 5 or 6 years of dragging mackerels in. i wonder if the small shimano i got this year will be half as tough? i find myself washing it out after every use now.
