[quote="Pat Spillane"]When everyone is finished swinging handbags, lets get back to the problem. Regardless of what knot you prefer make sure when you wind in that the knot is positioned to one side of the spool and not where you are placing your thumb.[/quote

theres your answer dave
stay with the shock leader its far safer

o.k i should put some sort of meaningful input here, you say you keep cutting your thumb when casting, try and set your knot to the far side of the spool when your reeling in instead of the middle, a thumb guard made of bike inner tube helps as well, i used to do it all the time. as far as the weed collecting on the knot goes, it happens, and is an inevitable thing that's almost always going to happen when its about, the wicklow beaches are renowned for heavy weed when the tide is running so its definitely not abnorma for there, tapered leads are an answer but i've never used them, although i am keen to give them a try.

Its one of the reasons I have stopped posting my own catch reports any more on the site, always too much agro and smart arses.

It used to be a decent site with good catch reports, advice etc but lately its getting a bit scorpy.

of what mate flounders, caught in the 70's. its people like you who bring the tone of the site down, ye havent a clue about distance casting, nor do i for that matter, but i dont go around handing dangerous advice to people telling them to powercast 25lb line. call us what you want , 'smart arses', 'agros' whatever, people who know me know im only messing on the site and never take things with a degree of seriousness, so maybe you should find another site, as the general consensus is that you wrong

If I am wrong then I am wrong. It does seem the consensus is that shock leader is required for distances of 100yards etc so if that is the case then I dont want to give anyone wrong "Advice" so to speak.
I never used it to much of a degree in the past so perhaps I was lucky not to harm anyone or have crack-offs.
(On that basis you could arue that I shouldnt have answered the post but it didnt look like many or any people had got back to him)

All I was trying to say was if he was not trying for massive distances that perhaps with a stronger line he could get away without shock leader.

Im sorry if I side tracked the post as it was not my intention to.

Sorry ladies but I just have to reply to this one.

I have fished with Eoughan a few times and he has a very unique cast. Using a light bass road with 3oz lead I have seen him whip a bait def over 100 yds, I'm not a bad caster myself but he can leave me for dead , it's more his technique than out and out power. As for the flounder , I caught that at few years ago down in wexford. I know leaders can be a good idea but we are not tackle junkies with stupid big leads, zipplex rods(iron bars) and bird nesting multipliers !

reply all you like simple rule is 10lb line for every ounce it aint hard to work 25lb main is perfectly safe casting up to 2.5 ounces, ie its not hard to work out but it could be the fact i use stupid big leads, zipplex rods(iron bars) and bird nesting multipliers !
cope on and bring something with a bit of fact or actual help to the table,
as for the flounder well that proves what the guys are saying he said he caught in oct this year
this thread has gone way of

I think if you do a little search under dbrock you'll see he knows how to fish pretty well. That sort of comment really is meant to do nothing but offend and brings nothing to the forum. You should keep your number of posts at 2.

read my reply i never attacked you ,, i stated about the rule of casting lb line to weight size (something like that im sure some of the real casters will fill you in) then i also said about the flounder which you say you now caught, nice fish , so in what way were you offended,

well starting you first post on the site with "Sorry ladies" isn't a great idea either.

and you have to think, if a total beginner is reading this and sees you saying thats its only a "good idea" to use leaders and then goes out on the beach with some 25lb line and a 6oz lead, its not going to end well.

and then you say "just learn to fish"........er, i think thats a pretty big part of learning to fish, learning to tie on a shockleader :? :?

and lastly, you attacked everyone who uses zziplex rods and multis, so don't say you were just defending yourself.

petekd wrote:Ill second that. It wasnt a line break for me but a knot giving way yesterday when power casting, i sent a 6 oz weight within an inch or two of lumpys bonce. Not the same thing i know but its a bloody good example as to what can happen. Its never ok to power cast without one, 30lb straight through or not. The only time i ever fish without one is scratching with up to 3 oz within the first 20 to 30 yards.

Yeah,

but you got lessons off Danny (aka lead burrier)
