fixed spool reels

At the suggestion of various members and given the magazines will run a mile from criticising a piece of kit, here is your chance to tell us what you really think about a rod, reel, line, lure... keep it legal please!

Have had a bit of DAM gear over the years, always found them top quality. Using a pair of Speedcast 860 for about the last five years during winter and summer and have found them excellent, great build quality. Picked them up for a reasonable price mail order. Anyone know where you can buy DAM in Ireland?

I got one (850) over the summer its stiff and jerky. thought it was just me. Only used it a bout 10 times. Almost impossible to turn when you've a decent fish or good haul of weed also.

I now Know what I need off Santa.
A new reel.

€150 plus
Any recommendations?

Dave,

Any of the Shimano range are reliable..For that money i'd look at the Shimano Biomaster or something, I use Daiwa emcaset that are half the price and haven't had any issues one still going strong 2 years later and the other perfect after almost a year :D

Although I would also recommend the Ian Golds F/S reels, they look sweet, I'll probably get one myself after Christmas. Give Paul Mason on the site a PM for more info.

With Fixed Spool reels you get what you pay for. Buying a cheap fixed spool reel is false economy they tend to last for a season or less and pack in. What might seem like a bargain at the time might cost you more financially in the long run, or worse still loose a fish of a lifetime. The quality of the materials in some of the cheaper reels is quite poor, bearings, gears, spindle shaft and the body itself. Many of them come from the cheaper factories in the Far East not dedicated to building quality. If you’re serious about your fishing you are better paying a little more and buying quality.
