Trabane Beach, South Donegal 7th Oct

#1 Post by pete »

People:6 Donegal Bay

Duration:6.30pm to 10.30pm

Tide:Dropping until 10pm

Weather:Mild with F2 to F3 south easterly. Drizzle for a while too

Bait:Lugworm, sandeel and mackerel

Rigs:Two hook clipped, flyer, three hook flapper

Results:Flounders, poor cod, dog, mackerel, dab

Catch and Release:: Yes

Report:Fished the morning before in Malta in no more than a pair of swimming togs, 24 hours later i'm sitting in a beach buddy in a pair of chest waders, fleece, wooly hat and smock :lol:

Fishing club match on a very calm Trabane, eveybody expecting doggies and thats what we all start out to try and hit. Baits going long although i'm sticking on an extra flyer in close for any flounder. Typically dogs decide to bugger off and only one is caught.

Flounders though are out and about. Once it gets dark they are nore than 4 feet from waters edge :) Most average around 23cm but a few 25cm counters too, manage three out of eight. Seanie I think had a similar ratio and overall number. Lot of phosporecence in the water and at the end of the comp I walked along the beach in no more than 2ft of water, loads of flats go zooming off ahead of me, there outline being traced in the phosphorescence. Was one of the coolest things I've seen at the sea, like a fireworks display and it was possilbe to watch them zooming off for about 5 or 6 metres.

sounded like it was an amazing sight pete. definitely one for the photo album. A sight I have yet to experience. do u think it has something to do with it being a full moon - i can vaguely remember seeing something on it.

It was a really cool sight, didn't expect to see so much phosphoresence in the water this late in the year, still must be a fair amount of plankton in the water. Not sure about the moon effecting it Roundourway, sounds interesting though...if you have any info on it throw it on to us mate.

it could also have something to do with the mild weather we are having
