Problem with Surfmaster 850

At the suggestion of various members and given the magazines will run a mile from criticising a piece of kit, here is your chance to tell us what you really think about a rod, reel, line, lure... keep it legal please!

Problem with Surfmaster 850

#1 Post by Scamper »

I just got this reel from veals 2 hours ago. I took the drag nut off the top and put the other spool on but now the nut wont go back on no matter how hard i push it down. Has anyone else had this problem?

Rang veals. They said its probably the drag nut thats the problem. They are sending a replacement nut. Hopefully that fixes it.

Got a new drag nut from penn today. Solved the problem. I must have just been unlucky to get a faulty one first time.

Bought it from Veals. They contacted Penn who sent out the replacement.

When I took apart the old drag knob the first thread in the nut looks like it wasnt formed properly.

has any one had any problems with this reel slipping under pressure?? the bros reel when he gets caught and tries to pull for a break slips no matter how much he tightens down the drag.....annoying as this is the second problem he has had with this reel :?

I dont think that the reels have problem nutsbutz.....its just prform well and what its designed to do.....but again its depend on how much pressure/pull that the drag slip.....actually its a no-no just to lock the drag and just pull it for the break....u dont want to have a problem with ur bail arm later in the future......the proper way to pull for a break is by holding the line or wrap it to a rag/clothes/a piece of wood and pull it....and not by pulling straight away with ur rods and reel.....

ive had the 750 for just under a year now and took it apart last night for a good clean/ service/ lube job. haven't had too many probs with it during the year other than roller bearing seizing. its only when you take one apart you see how crap they really are. the amount of places water and sand can get in is quite bad. following that with the fact that they are quite complicated to dissemble reassemble i can confidently say that these reels are following in their discontinued predecessors footsteps. i know its only a matter of time until it gets unfeasible to replace/ clean parts. ever since penn manufactured in far east quality has gone to hell. i have used penn reels all my life for boat and beach and this is the last one i will ever buy.
