Good Weekend out of Rathmullan

#1 Post by arthurg »

I was out both Saturday and Sunday this weekend. The forecast high pressure and sunshine never appeared and it was rather choppy, but the fishing was very good.

On Saturday I was asked to be cabin boy on the Swiily Explorer with Eugene the skipper. Five Poles had booked the boat and they had asked if they could fish for shark despite being novices of only one or two previous trips. We headed out on the Swilly Explorer (Rathmullan Charters), caught loads of mackerel which I pummelled and oiled and reached a point about three miles north of Fanad head.

We got the boys set up and tried to explain how to fish for Blues. Within the first hour they had three solid runs, but through excitement and inexperience all were lost. Eugene and I were getting worried that they just wouldn't get the technique right then Sylwester gor a good run and played it by the book.

Everything went to plan. I had set the drag on the reel well and as predicted once it seen the boat it ran again, then again, and again...........

About 40 minutes later we got the Blue on the deck. It was estimated at around 75Lbs.

I'll get JGF or someone more intelligent than me to post the image.

Then on Sunday we had a league outing with both boats - the Swilly Explorer and the Enterprise both out. Choppy again but a good days fishing.

Let's see - we had Pollock, Conger, Ling, Pouting, Red Grey and Tub Gurnard, Whiting, Dab, Wrasse, and Dog - all in quite promising numbers.

All-in-all a good weekend on the Swilly.

Now - anyone aly good with photos of the Blue?[/img]

About 3 miles due north of Fanad Head.

We're going out again this Sunday to try for some ourselves this time. Report to follow next week. JGF and I will be among those fishing so here's hoping we have some luck!

Unfortunately no report on the next trip. Weather was awful and we didn't get out.

We did have a league outing on the Swilly on Sunday 2nd Sept though and the fishing was the very best it has been all year. Some of the highlights were loads of counting, though not massive, Pollock, Conger to around 20Lb taken on the drift!, Ling, a couple of Codling, loads of counting Whiting to a reasonable size, along with the usual Swilly fare of Red, Grey & Tub Gurnard, Dogs, Thornies, a couple of Coalies, a few flats, etc.

Sorry for crap report - really busy just now. But trust me - it was good!
