People: Neilus and I

Duration: 20:15 - 01:15

Tide: low 20:30

Weather: dead calm, humid, patchy cloud

Bait: mack frozen, lures

Rigs: conger rig, flapper, paternoster

Results: Huss, conger, pollack

Catch and Release:: Yes

Report: got down to a lovely little bay - with potential written all over it - water was well low but started off spining in the last of the light - neilus was fly fishing - had about 20 casts each and no takes - so baits on (lost 1 large shad lure)

started out with a pulley about 60 yards - all was quiet

after an hour neilus got a good huss about 5-6 pound - at least we knew there was something there!

i put out a 2 hook flapper on the second rod - barely in and got a bootlace conger - indicative of the messy ground infront of us - this was going to be the theme of the night

then neilus had a great take on the drop of one of his casts - a smash and grab by a 4lb pollack

then i had another conger about 2.5-3lb

it went quiet again after this - there seems to be loads of insects/plankton in the water - maybe it was the weed seed also?

had a few more runs and my flapper rig bit the dust - neilus could see the conger in the water but couldnt move it - had to pull for a break

neilus i think lost a rig at this stage - the ground was showing its true colours - it seemed to get worse as the tide filled?

i put on a heavier conger rig and it wasnt long till i got a huss! in the meantime neilus got a strap himself 3-4lb

this huss balled himself up and i thought i was losing the rig again - but eventually pulled him out - thought somefight - turned out he was only 3lb - great craic fair play to him

neilus had another huss round the 4-5lb mark - and i lost another rig

i then proceeded to lose another lure on a reef near the surface (long story  )

its been a while since i lost this much tackle - and this wasnt that bad compared to some of the loses ive had - makes me appreciate how much ive been getting away with it recently

there were plenty of bites and cleaned hook through the night but no more fish were hooked up through the session

wouldnt mind trying it again at HW and maybe more light

oh yea the bats were having a field day round us attracting all the moths to the headlamps

also saw this mental swallow outside a shop we had stopped near - using the advertisement light to swoop and pick off moths - crazy

good craic and banter with neilus as always - he'll faceoff with that bull one of these days

on a sour note some dodgy f**ker was burning loads of wood and brash in a huge field he had cleared near bell harbour - but in the middle of his fire - you could see that he was burning off tyres, paint and plenty of other toxic stuff im sure he shouldnt be, with all the thick jet black smoke - was still burning on the way home...
