Bass & Drift Netting

Attached pic of dead bass & drift net set across rocks at Wexford Mark. Location etc has been reported to Fisheries Board. mod edit. Anyone else come across similar recently? - seems the ban is being ignored. It's important to make the board aware of locations/timing should such nets be encountered.

There have been a lot of reports of netting around Wexford. It appears to be a particular problem this year.

Did the ERFB follow up on it?

Well done - and congratulations on the hard evidence. Its not always easy to obtain it. The more anglers are aware of this issue the better i say. If possible could you please e-mail me a copy of the photos.

If that was a drift net the boat that shot it would be with it! Otherwise it would drift away! Drift netting it a method only used for salmon or herring fishing.

I wouldn't be too quick to admit to "carving it up" on a public forum, you may find that you are admitting to criminal damage to the net.

All the fisherman needs to say is that he was fishing for pollack or mullet etc and that any bass would have been returned dead or alive to the sea, then it is you that's in hot water as it is impossible to prove against the netter. I have seen and heard this before several times here locally where solicitors and even the judge ran rings around the fishery board officers on legal technicalities.

So I would advise you just report it to the fishery board and let them deal with it in future.

Accepted Mohawk, but Drift Net, Gill Net or Set Net - call it what you want. The location of the net (in shallow tidal water, anchored to shore) made it absolutely clear as to what was being targeted. Spotted and recovered as tide was dropping and only fish caught in it were 2 Bass (Second Bass managed to recuperate and was released to sea). Happy to appear in Court and accept the consequences but I doubt if that will happen.

brazil you did the right thing, the net is rigged for illigal poaching of bass/salmon/sea trout.. it looks like a 4in. multi mono, note the blue floats there for deep water gillnets the brownish float is a drift net float, the reason they are mounted like this is so that thay fish just under the surface which makes them very hard to spot, bet the whole net had 2 blue floats then a D.N.F. then 2 more blue and so on, bet it only had 1 small marker bouy on the outside, something like a 2 liter coke bottel.. next time burn them.

fair play, but as mohawk said be careful of the legalities.

i got snagged in a net a while ago and while trying to retrieve my plug the net got totally, accidentally, shredded on all the sharp rocks, pity for the net but what can you do.

Fair play indeed. Shame about the net you got snagged up in Adam S, I have heard of instances where nets have spontaneously burst into flames in similar circumstances :wink

Some good info there Art. I know exactly what to look for now.
