Colours for Lucky Craft Sammy?

#1 Post by inigo »

I'm about to buy a couple of sammy's to try and get the "elusive" bass... What colours would you recomend for Irish waters (East coast)? Aurora black, ghost blue shad, ghost minnow, any other?

Cheers!

Hi there inigo...
For me the color will come last if i wanna pick a lure....
The action of the lure will come first.....altho theres many thought from a diffrent school bout the criteria to choose a lure.
As for color most of the time i will avoid the 'monster' bright and striking, natural most of the time. For me the sammy not attract the fish thro visual, its more on the sound of splashing water and vibration on the surface.Since the visual will come last after the fish detect the source of sound and vibration.Sammy sit mostly near vertical on the surface(mimicking an injured fish, head up on surface, and body down) due to their banana shape and ballancer weight,so a bit darker color will highlight silhouette of the lure a gain the sky background. This is vital since most of the fish will attack this kind of lure from bellow from my experience.I will say any 3 that u listed before will do.I have a good success on aurora ghost but with other species 2 years back.

lures

I

Before you spend 60 euros on three sammies - be aware there is no 'silver bullet' lure for catching bass - although these are the best of their type they will not neccesarily catch you fish where traditional lures have failed.

If you cant get them on toby's, krills, rapalas, etc then there might be something wrong with your strategy or methods - these lures will not put bass in your hands where others have failed. All of the above including all sorts of imitations etc will catch fish for you.

The key is timing and place.

Jim, thanks for the advice. I wasn't thinking of spending all that money though. I was curious about what colours people tend to use here. I was aware of what you say about the bass (I've read a lot) but I'm only starting to fish at all, so I suppose I'll learn by getting out there. ;)

I already got a Sammy (transparent green = ghost ayu?). I was trying to do the "walk-the-dog" a couple of days ago when I got an attack. I'm pretty sure it was a small pollock (because of where I was) but it was really exciting and my face would have been something like this:  . I also have the Maria equivalent and a Zara Spook but if the Sammy proves difficult, nevermind the other two! I think one of the problems is the line I use: Power Pro 20lb. I've just got the same in 10lb, so hopefully I'll cast farther and get to move them properly.

Inigo, here's a tip from a beginner with walk-the-dog and these sorts of lures!! I've found practicing in a flat calm without cross wind to be easier. Also, I've found it to be important to really have the rod at 90 degrees to the line direction. Keep reminding yourself to do this! The trick seems to be very small twitches of the rod tip. If you're using a longer rod, grip it further up the butt to make twitching easier.

I'd say 20lb braid should be OK.

The experts might have more to say on this.

Hope it helps.

Inigo, its depend where u get the lure from....actually they just cost arround euro 8,but if you get them locally the cost can get more than 2 times.I found out that uk and ireland tend to get late info and good product compare to the other european country such as spain, france etc....specially in lure fishing stuff....sammy and wander was so popular long time ago...and it just get popular now in ireland....yet their rival Dog-X(Megabass) never make it here.
As walking the dog, used mono leader, braid tend to drag water on the twitch and have so much effect on windy day,Fluoro carbon,hi in density than mono, sinking rate is higher, also will sink and drag water, effect the lure action.I dont think sammy design(banana) is for fast walk the dog, even tho theres no right or wrong in presenting this kind of lure(also known as stick bait). For me its more suitable for slow walk the dog,twitch-pause-twitch-pause-twitch-pause....stop....twitch-twitch-twich....ose a diffrent caddance that suit you....you dont need an extreme swing for each twitch for this lure....a few degree to left and right each twitch is enuff....u can see in the u tube above how he walk the dog sammy. The gear for lure fishing also have to be ballance line,reel,rods....i notice a lot of angler using wrong rods, too long rod,too stiff with casting weight stated not intend to cast the lure that they re using...its make casting and presentation of the lure become hard and in some case turn them off from lure fishing....u dont need big reel...a 100 m of 10lb braid will do,i use 8 lb braid and never had an issue even on snag......Do notice that before you buy them...get the one that u really need for your application(freshwater or saltwater)The ballance of each sammy is diffrent for diffrent application.Salwater is more hevier weighted since the diffrent in density of freshwater and saltwater.Theres a lot of sammy out there....fw,sw,wood sammy, big game sammy....look for the word ESG on the packet....its stand for Enjoy Salt Game...for saltwater application.

Thank you all for the tips!! I really appreciate the help. I'll hopefully be going on a spinning/plugging session early next week in South Dublin/North Wicklow if anyone's up for it.

Cheers!
