Rays night or daytime

Hi Everyone I am trying to get my 1st painted ray in the tralee area and would like a bit of advice on the best time to concerntrate my efforts . I am worried that at night the dogs will stop me from catching my target fish . Have any of you had success in daylight ? Any help would be much apreiciated .

hey there and welcome to the site.
from my little knowledge they can be caught both day and night. but your right its sometimes getting through the dogfish. i counted 9 dogfish before i connected to a thornie.
I don't know the area but I am sure some of the other fella's will help you out

I wouln't say it was day or night but dusk and dawn when tides suit. These low light conditions give the best chance of ray. Saying that plenty of ray caught during the day especialy with dirty water but they do feed better at night but so do other species. Dogs can be a nusance at night but the bain of my fishing in Limerick at night is strap conger.

Found you thoughts on the matter very interesting about the dirty water , low light and tidal conditions . Its quite normal for the same to apply for bass and cod where i fish sometimes in the south coast of england. Perhaps i should treat them the same bar the baits being changed for fresh mack and sand eel .
I to have found the straps a problem when fishing in the shannon .One night i ran out of bait so i used them for bait , very good for casting and plenty of blood . Managed a few bullies and more straps even a couple of small rays showed an interest. Thanks lads . And the name weeman has nothing to do with my shirt size.

we had a fishing competition in Gaulaune strand last year and there were 2 ray caught both as it got dark and around/ a bit after high tide on mackeral I think conditions were unbelievabaly calm.

I once caught a couple of painted rays on a bright day in perhaps ten feet of water from a beach in Aberystwyth, Wales. Bait was frozen sandeels lobbed out 40 to 50 yards, on sand inside a patch of broken ground. The water was clear with a two foot swell running. Incoming tide. Obviously it will be different in Kerry, but hopefully this will give you hope of a ray during the day.

The ones I caught in Kerry earlier this year were all at night at the start of the flood tide. Thats not to say they wouldn't show up during daylight hours......

So it is looking good day or night, its possible to get them in any conditions and its a matter of the the right venue on a flooding tide then . Many thanks lads for your help i will post it if i get one in about a months time . On the dropping tides I be will getting down to brandon pier for a beer . The guy who owns it does really serve an extra special guiness. Once i asked if he had any food . I ended up eating his dinner !!!!!!!

Hi,
I have caught lots of painted ray from Castlegregory during the brightest of days with falt calm seas , best bait being fresh sandeel with frozen Ammo sandeel a close second.Found 2 hours into the flood up to an hour before high the most productive time.Hope this helps.
