Donegal Bay Rock Marks - 21st & 23rd August

#1 Post by pete »

People:Mates and myself

Duration:Two evening sessions

Tide:

Weather:Bright with light northerly the first day. Light to moderate westerly, dull on the second

Bait:Crab, mussel and berkely gulp crab

Rigs: 1 hook ledger(rotten bottom) and 1 hook float

Results: Ballan Wrasse, cuckoo wrasse, corkwing wrasse (30 odd wrasse), scad and mackerel

Catch and Release:: Yes

Report:Spent two seperate evenings after wrasse again. Monday tried a spot I had fished before and found plenty inside a gulley with a cobble bottom. Water was brillantly clear and it was possible to watch them darting about around 10feet down. Nothing above 3 3/4lb although again even in a northerly they kept on taking.

Second day at my usual haunt was interesting in that the fish aside from one or two refused to rise up a little to take the float fished crab, it had to be fished tight with the ledger and even then takes were very difficult to convert to fish. Normally here they are gung ho but today was very different. The mate Dave brought along some of his berkely gulp crab and although I was sceptical It managed to pull out a decent wrasse of 3lb on the 2nd cast, plenty of other bites on it too....even nipping off the little rubber legs of the crab :lol: Was pleasantly surprised to see an artificial actually working. Used some frozen mussel for an experiment and that got plenty of hits too.

Finished up the 2nd trip with a bit of spinning and in the dying light took a few mackerel and scad.

Sounds like a good couple of sessions pete ,I think Davy and I will be up around the malin area at the end of september for a recce , I might stock up on some gulp crab baits as back up .
If someone shows you a mark to fish, respect it and dont pass it of as one of your own, dont tell every man and his dog about it.

I was suprised how well the berkely stuff worked, every cast with it I was getting plenty of bites. It was damn sight more resilent than the real crab too, they had the real thing swiped of the hook every cast whilst you would get maybe four or five drops with the berkely.
