Donegal Rock Mark - Sunday August 19th

#1 Post by pete »

People:Me & mate Paul

Duration:1pm to 6.30pm

Tide:LW around 4pm

Weather:Beautiful

Bait:Rag, crab, lug and mackerel

Rigs:Float fished 1 hook, 1 hook (6/0) ledger

Results:Ballan wrasse, cuckoo wrasse, goldsinny wrasse, corkwing wrasse, rockcook, conger and mullet

Catch and Release:: Yes

Report:Had been fishing on the saturday evening but the weather was desperate so had called it quits after only two hours. It was that bad (we had disposable barbecue) that it blew the bun and then the cheese of my burger when i put it down for a second :x So with a stack of bait still in the fridge the mate and myself headed off to do a bit of wrasse fishing.

Things started slowly and it was only smaller wrasse that appeared, still by dropping the hook size down we managed to pick up some of the smaller wrasse species including a beautiful little rockcook. Crabs were useless for these wee lads and it was only by using worm baits that we got any strikes.

Had meanwhile put out two mackerel fillets on bottom ledger for conger and quickly hauled in two straps. Sport with the wrasse picked up in the later evening when the tide turned as we managed a run of much better ballans up to just under 4lb. As usual we missed plenty of bites but then again thats part of the fun with wrasse hunting :) The congers kept coming too and in the end I had 6 to 6lb, there are bigger eels on the ground but they just didn't show today(night trip will be in order soon).

Had a nice surprise halfway through today when a mullet took a liking to the lugworm that i had put down for a wrasse, scared the hell out of me and after a great scrap a 4lb fish was landed. Really enjoyable days fishing in great weather, not too often the two have coincided this summer!

How do you go about avoiding the little buggers? Fishing two medium size fillets on the one hook and then changed over to a small full joey but they just mangled that too.
