Report:
bit of a marathon session today.initially fished a mark for ray as the todes were perfect. first cast out i had a good knock which i was sure was a dog, when i struck there was a solid weight and something trying to swim the opposite way.i was sure it was a ray of reasonible weight. 2 minutes later i had him 5 yards out and was just about to beach him when he made one final attempt at escaping but disaster struch and one of my knots on the pulley rig pulled, i wont repeat what i said!!!!!!, any way all this mark finished up producing was loads of dogs
a quick bite of grub and i was off to mark number 2. by now the wind had freshend and to make matters worse i was going to the south side of the peninsula which meant the wind and rain would be blowing off the atlantic. i got there and my fears were realised when i saw huge breakers breaking offshore, luckily this mark is protected by a large jut of rock in the bay so i had shelter from the waves, if not the other eliments. first job was to get the beach shelter up, not easy i must say in a force 6/7 and on rock.luckily i had parachute cord so was able to anchor it off the rocks, when it was up i must say it was amazingly stable, credit to the makers.
first cast out resulted in a small dog which was to be expected as the huss only feed on this mark from an hour before to an hour after. next cast i got a more substantial cast which resulted in a small huss of about 3 lbs. not the biggest but a start i thought. for the next hour i proceeded to catch a host dogs. as darkness and hightide arrived i had my first good run. by now i had changed from fillets to mini flappers which i find dont get as much interest from the dogs. this fish hit the bait very agressively, taking about 5 yards in a jerky initial run, it then settled and gave me a very big slack liner. i wound furiously and hit it but everything had gone solid.i pointed the rod at him and slowly walked backwards but the pressure was to great and it gave. when i wound in i discovered that my hooklength was quite frayed, whether this was a huss or possibly a conger i dont know but i was fishing 100lb hooklength so must have been a relatively good fish.
by now the rain an wind were howling past but amazingly the beach shelter stayed put. i rebaited with another mini flapper and lobbed it our the 40 or so yards to the gulley where i had missed the previous one. 10 mins later i had another run, again similar to the initial one. ileft this one slightly longer as he seem more trepident. after about 5 mins of playing with the bait it finally gave a solid indication that it had taken it. i struck and the enigma hooped over as quite a weighty fish decided ot didnt like being hooked. for a while i was sure it was a good conger as it was tracking back and forth but when he got to my feet i could see it was a good, and must i say very angry huss. 10 1/4 lbs he weighed and was nicely lip hooked in the corner of the mouth.
again another mini flapper was baited and hastly cast out. this time i only had to wait 5 or so mins as again i got a very good run, i think it may have taken 10 yards. he then turned and swam back to me.ive always found that when a huss does this it is best to leave it be, before i used to tighten up on them but kept getting dropped runs. i now leave them for 2-3 mins before tightening and striking. this one didnt feel as big as the previous. he just seemed to come in with steady pressury, that was until i got him to the rock face when he went bezerk, kept circuling under the rod tip and thrashing the water. finally i was able to subde him and lift from the water. to my surprise he weiged just obove 10lbs. 2 double figure fish in one night, happy days !!!!
p.s. ive put pics but because it was my fone there very bad quality, hopefully ya can make out the fish.
regards neil
