Red Gill, Cork Harbour - 31st July

#1 Post by Pat »

People:Me & the kids

Duration:6:00 - 9:30

Tide:HT 19:30

Weather:Hot, blue skies, light SW breeze

Bait:Plugs

Rigs:

Results:4 bass; 12 pollack

Report: First trip in ages on the boat. Brought the kids out to a favourite spot. The clarity of the water was spectacular. Crystal clear. We could see down 20 - 30 feet at least. This would put paid to catching bass I thought but I was proved wrong. For the first hour we had no fish but we had follows for nearly every cast. Everytime we retrieved a lure it was followed, or escorted should I say, by one or two bass. The bass swam parallel to the lures - almost as if in the crystal clear water they could see that it wasn't a fish but needed to get a close up view of what it was. Just when I thought it would be a lost cause one of the daughters connected. As she retrieved her plug there was a boil in the water behind it and before I could offer advice the bass hit the lure. Several minutes later after a bit of struggle she landed the best bass of the evening. A nice fish of 5lbs approx. After that herself and her sister landed three more smaller fish aswell as a dozen small pollack averaging between 1/2lb and 3/4lb. Some of the pollack were smaller in length than the plugs they were savaging. Despite consistent efforts on my part I failed to hook a fish all evening. Not for the first time, was I shown up by the kids!

Great pictures Pat.... Always nice to see kids fishing.

Well done on the Bass, they can be really difficult in clear water like that.

Out with the kids again this Weds (8th August). Fishing was fairly slack. However, given that this was the smallest tide of the month, this was to be expected. Had a mixed bag of pollack, cod, tub gurnard, & mackeral.
