People: jd, kev, seaniebo, Donogh and jw the fish didn't stand a chance
Duration: 6pm till 12 pm
Tide: fished most of the flood
Weather: SSE F4
Bait: really fresh mackerel
Rigs: tope rig, one hook running ledger wire or heavy mono at hook
Results: Mackerel, Grey gurnard, dog fish, Bull Huss, Thornback ray
Report: Headed out from Malahide at 6pm, close to low water there. There was just enough depth in the channel due to the spring tide, and headed straight to the Bennet bank.
The tide was already flooding fast -- it turns earlier on the banks out there. The breeze was a little fresher than forecast. Mackerel were plentiful and a bucket was quickly filled. Two Grey Gurnards came up in the feathers. Mackerel had been feeding on sandeel.
The boat was anchored and held easily in the strong tide using 10kg bruce and no chain.
The baits were big flappers hoping for a tope. There was a constant background noise of doggies, without reaching plague proportions. a lot not hooked but refusing to let go of the mackerel. jd landed a nice thornback over the 8lb mark.
As the sun started to set, bull huss appeared in force. 7 or 8 were landed, all around the 8lb mark. I think the best over 10lbs. One was also not hooked just unprepared to let go of his diner, another took two hooks deeply. There was a major medical drama trying to unhook it, and at one stage it bit sean's finger and its mouth could not be prised open :shock:
Kev produced top class sausages from a special butcher in ashbourne which were superb. Previous sausage cook unceremoniously dismissed. Much consternation when a wave knocked the hot cajun and vinegar sauce off the table and broke it
No tope in the end, but a nice evening to be out

F 4 SSE i would say that caused a bit of a chop out there.
very shocked :shock: to see one member of the crew without a life jacket on. :x whatever chance you would have in daylight you have none in the dark i personally think it was very irresponsible of the skipper to allow such carry on with the amount of lost lives at sea over the last couple of years.
i fish from a number of boats both mine and friends small boats and not so small and first thing that happens before any boat goes to sea is the crew put the jackets on before leaving port whatever the weather.

Fair point John..... To be honest the sea conditions were not bad at all, and when the photo was taken it was very calm. That does not excuse me though. :oops: I normally always wear a life vest. My only excuse was that my jacket is was left onboard Puca when I was out with Big Kev.
My opoligies to JW if I put you in an arkward situation.
You'll be glad to hear that I spent very little time on deck. As a thank you to the skipper for the invite I brought the sausages and I spent most of my time in the wheelhouse cooking for the guys. :D

that was my fault. there's a pile of them in the wheel house and i just forgot to say to kev put one of those on if you like. i assumed he knew they were there and he may not have
