Gobbins Cliffs.

9 Pollock / 2 Wrasse / 1 Codling / 1 Coalie:

Catch and Release:: yes

Day started well,was well into an hour before i had my first 3 pound pollock then they kept coming until around 2pm then the tide changed,and then nothing for about an hour.Decided to stay then caught the 2 wrasse,then the codling came just beside a rock,I casted in my float rigged with 2 mussels and a strip of mackerel into a deep gulley in front of a rock and kept getting knocks on the float for about 20 minutes then bang the float went under,i struggled with the rod as the fish was trying to go under the cliff but i pulled it out and landed a coalie,was some size too.All in all a good day apart from the fact it rained heavily most of the day and we had to trudge through a river where the waterfall was as it was gushing but smiles all round.:

Well done Carl - great session there.

I've never fished this mark - might give it a go soon.

Is the ground rough or clean here?

Would there be any conger?

Carl Ive looked for this mark but cant seem to find how to get to it. I'm told its quite a walk but where do you park? and how do you access the cliffs?

right to start with,the ground is rocky,depending on what rigs your using you can at times become snagged,especially when you get a hard take and the fish dives under the rocks,that can be quite an annoyance for you.

word of advice when fishing gobbins,dont leger,you always get your lead stuck,even with a lifter,its real bad.

conger - at dusk through the night till around sunlight.not a good idea to fish that place unless the water is real flat,high tide with rough waters can be a bit scary down there.

to get to gobbins. you head for islandmagee,go over the estuary to you come to a junction,go straight over, past a housing estate on your right till you come to another junction,theres a vivo shop dead opposite,turn left (signs point you to browns bay,ballylumford etc etc),go down that road a little bit and theres a right turning - gobbins road - head up that and follow it to you come to the 2nd lay by at the side of the road,theres blocks in the ground,park there,cross the road,head down to the farmhouse,when there,turn right down another path till you come to the monument (mind though its quite steep),follow that till you get downnon the rocky beach and walk over the landslide,that takes into the cliffs,but DO NOT walk this after heavy rain,the waterfall fills up the beach and theres no way across unless you have waders on or something.brilliant though on a calm day.

I could only get on the gobbins when the tide was out me and a few mates fished it a good few years back there is a bridge well what remains of it reminds you of something out a Indiana Jones what's left is just the start and finish that stops you from going further round to your right.

anyway we where only bout 14 or 15 at the time when the tide came up and cut us off a mate panicked and started climbing up the cliff reckoned he could get to the top where there was farmers fields and get help he froze half way up and couldn't go up or down as this was happening me and the other mate were eating his sausages and burgers that we were cooking on his coleman stove didn't have mobiles them days but by chance we saw the bangor boat full of tourist we shouted over to them for bout 20 minutes then they heard us as they came closer all the Chinese tourist started taking photos of my stuck up the cliff the skipper shouted over he was on to the coast gaurd about 30 min later a big bird lifted him off the cliff then lifted us with all our gear haven't been back since

will have ta get down for a wee fish

how hard of a trek is it on a good day

trying to find places to take the 6yo daughter to throw a float out where we arent going to be getting in other peoples way

Don't think it is a good idea for the wee one - too much of a hike.

I would recommend the follwing -

Portmuck Harbour
Cushendall - Dalriada Pier
Carnlough Harbour

was thinkin that just wasnt too sure how much of a hike it was..

was always told there was nowhere to fish from gobbins unless in a boat..

but shes havin a good run at ballylumford maybe jus stick to it portmuck can get a little busy

Hey johnstone, should there be a MR in that title?. I have been thinking of trying balylumford myself. Whats it like to fish late night to sun up? are there any street lights about and whats the car parking like? I do have my own lights etc, but i want to know is the car safe etc..thanks

theres a "t" but no "e" in that name :P and the mr makes me sound like a teacher

ballylum can get kinda dark at pier you do get some light from the harbour across the water but its a bit awkward to work with .. never fished it real late on think latest would be bout midnight car parkings grand especially on the left pier or if your game enough to drive up the right one makes things handy

but i usually leave car unlocked wit no probs in the car park you can see it anyway[/quote]

dont bother taking your daughter mate,its some trek,you have to cross a rocky beach then walk over a landslide,then up and down steps,that are suffering corrosion,if your fishing it with mates or something then yeah its a good spot.

as for Ballylumford,ive fished it day and night,day you catch mostly wrasse,but on float,night time can get very interesting,most species of fish can be caught but if the doggies come,its bye bye and pack up for the night,they wont leave your bait alone.Parking is more or less right next to you,lighting isnt brilliant but it depends on where you stand,and if the harbour master is around he leaves the toilets unlocked for you if your doing an allnighter.

To be honest i wouldnt bother going to either,not one of those places are doing well at all,personally antrim coast is fished out.
