Abu Garcia Multiplier

Hey lads,

Just wondering what you's think of the Abu Garcia 6500 Power Handle as a first multiplier?

Until now I've been using a Shamano fixed spool baitrunner for my sea fishing.

Are multipliers hard to get the hang of?

Any info or advie welcome

I've got one and it seems ok for the cash but haven't got around to using it much. If you're in dublin let us know and you can have a go if you like.

hi mate, try a diawa 7ht, the older black model, they are great for learning with and great for fishing with too, easy to cast and control, well thats what i thought anyway

I learned (still learning

) on a 525 mag

easy to control

and just about bullet proof

i got the mag version of that reel last week as my first multiplier. have had a couple of birdies(both of which caught me fish) when i got over ambitious, but overall i find it much easier to cast than a fixed spool. the retrieve is a little slow.

Thanks for the info lads,

I'm a little less worried about the change over now. I've been reading a lot of articles regarding the benifits of using a multiplier over a fixed spool and they all basically come down to the same thing. If you don't try to get the maximum distance out of your cast you will avoid birds nests and complications. Seemingly an average cast with a multi will gain much better distance than an all out power cast with a fixed spool.

Well ya gotta learn sometime right!

one thing to remember is to keep the cast as smooth as possible or birdys will follow ,lead size is important also to get the best out of a multi set up

Well guys thanks for all the advice and info.

I bought the Abu muliplier in the end. The 6500. Paid €75 for it so not too bad.

Went to Bray harbour yesterday evening after work to try it out. Tried all baits and lures but nothing. Didn't mind just wanted to try out my new toy.

I have to say you guys make it look very easy! My first cast was ok not too far but decent enough. On my third or forth cast I really messed up and got a serious birds nest that I just could not untangle.

Firstly, do I need to remove the spool to untangle the line and should I replace it all together?

Secondly do I need to push the button on the reel in mid cast to let the line out or is it better practice to press the button first and hold the line with my thumb and then cast?

Sorry for asking stupid questions but really would like to get the hang of multipliers. The first cast, although not far, felt great. Far better than a fixed spool.

Any help?

thats cheap for a 65,,where did you pick that up from,,?
In answer to your two "Q"s
1. if the birdy is very bad just get the sissors to it but leave the spool in place and just cut away the birdy.
2. Yes you press the spool release button before you go to cast and hold it with your thumb untill ready to cast.

Just keep everything slow and smooth and slowly build up the power.

Bought the reel in ABC Fishing Tackle Mary's Abbey in Dublin City.

So just to clarify,

1) Press the button
2) Hold line with thumb
3) Cast releasing the thimb hold

Is this right?

Disengage button, wrap your thumb around the spool and cast, releasing at the correct moment, making sure your shock leader knot is over to the far right or left of the reel so that it doesn't take half of the skin off your thumb on the way.

Others say differently but when I was teaching myself a few months back I wore the chopped off finger of a heavy garden style rubber glove to stop me losing my fingerprints, but very soon it was no good once I had a better feel for what I was doing.
