Dunseverick, Co Antrim - Sunday 8th July 2007

#1 Post by StevieC »

People: Matty, Paul and I

Duration: 11.30am to 5pm

Tide: low water up

Weather: sunny spells, overcast rain and showers

Bait: 3 day old mack and rag

Rigs: various

Results: 15 dogs, 1 coalie, 2 pollock

Catch and Release: Yes

Report:
Following our excursion the previous day to the exotic location of Fahan it was back to the bread and butter stuff at Dunseverick. The morning and early afternoon started off nice and bright with a pretty calm sea and after an hour or so the only fish was a dog caught by Matty on the manky mackerel.

Having fished this venue on the only good week end we have had this summer  and done badly, I wasn't surprised that the fishing was not great. This seems to be a venue where you need some movement in the water and conditions to be a bit on the dull side. Sure enough the black clouds moved in, Rathlin Island disappeared, the sea picked up and the rain came on and .....the fishing got better :D
The dogs were hard to get through but good sport especially when you got a double shot.

However, the odd pollock and coalie did make an appearance to bring a slight difference to the routine and although nothing spectacular the sport was consistent and a far cry from what we had experinced 24 hours earlier at Fahan. All in all not a bad days craic.

Ady,

If you look closely at the first photo there is a small bhoy (lobster pots) to the top left hand corner ( Matty's right shoulder). This was about 40/50 yds and we were casting just beyond this to either side. It is clean ground but the further right you come it tends to get rough.
The elevated position enables you to get the distance quite easily.

Well done lads - decent session.

I've never fished this mark, is it difficult to get to from the main road?

Would it be safe enough to fish at night?

Cheers,

Jude

Get back to work Stephen and stop all this fishing, some nice fish there as were your ones in Donegal.

G < Gavin. Dunseverick is a decent spot to fish in day time, but i dont think i would fancy it at night.

Jude,

Easy enough to get to from the main road - park in the lay by in Dunseverick opposite the road down to the harbour. When you cross over the road look to your left and it is the furthest point that you can see. Access is along the coastal path and then a short scramble over the rocks.
My advice is to travel as light as poss.

Re night time -I can tell you that my mates and I fished it one evening last June (you remember the lovely summer evenings we used to enjoy...... ) and the fishing was brilliant. Before we knew it, the twilight was upon us but lucky enough we had the lamps with us (this is before the days when we now travel light) so we fished on. The fishing got even better with good size pollock hammering every cast along with the dogs and a few good coalies. But the journey back over the rocks at 2am was slow and careful - I wouldn't have liked to have done it in wet conditions and not for a first visit.

Cheers
StevieC.

AH, now thats an interesting spot you fish. When i went there i parked at the harbour toiletss, went round the right hand side of the house and fished from the rocks behind it. Will have to try your wee spot sometime..
