fish species encountered when gathering bait

so far this year i have come across: 1 bass, 4 rockling, 4 butterfish, 3 silver eels and 1 conger (if it was 8cm it was lucky) when gathering bait.

just wondering what others have come across when doing the same

lots of blennys and gobys...also baby flatties and the odd sandeel.

A 3lb conger whilst looking for peelers in Dingle Bay was the highlight :P He was laying under seaweed in only a couple of inches of water although this was on one of the big springs.
Sea Species(25) bass, codling, whiting, turbot, seatrout, stingray, pollock, coalfish, longspine scorpion, ballan wrasse, dogfish, ling, pouting, poor cod, dab, mackerel, smelt, sandeel, launce, bull huss, painted ray, thick lip mullet, golden grey mullet, rock goby.
Fresh Water (2) brown trout, sea trout

came across a very large pipe fish stuck in a bait hole depression in baldoyle about 4 weeks ago.
this lad was about 15in long :shock: and 3/4 of an inch wide with vertical 1/2in dark stripes on its sides.main body colour was a slight green/grey.
never seen one as big before.

bait collection

connemara suckerfish - has a small modified fin on its belly just under the gills, amazing looking thing, maybe 5 cms long, quite short and squat in shape, likes rough ground with severe currents. Also many years ago in Lahinch I came across many small portuguese man o'war jellyfish - the adults are potentially lethal by all accounts but these were fist sized only...

small sole in dublin bay. flounder, rockling, stickleback(!), blenny, gobies, butterfish and i think thats it...

Not fish species I know but plenty of rats and 3/4 of a dog! A golden labrador I think. The joys of collecting bait in Dublin!

Yeah old Sheppy. Remember how you used to roll around in the seaweed with the old fella? Playing catch? Then youd have to walk home cos of the smell. Great times :lol:

Found a dead rotting seal in galway. One of the worst smells ive smelt.

Also happened upon this was in the paper last summer, its a baby humpback whale.

Strap congers, silver eels, Blennies, butter fish.


I was wondering too, can you use butter fish as bait? I never tried them but they would be some fun trying to get them onto a hook! :lol:

in the saleens dragging a net for sand eel we had a few palm sized turbot, shrimp and an uncomfortable amount of weaver fish

congers, river eels, small flatfish mostly.

the dead fish that have washed up are numerous - the biggest being a skate or LARGE ray, it was difficult to tell because it was fairly bloated and smelled too bad to go near.

the worst thing was a bag of kittens.

butterfish, sandeels, pipefish, baby pollock, conger, baby lobster, sticklebacks, blenny, goby and a small wrasse.
