East Cork Rock Mark, 03/07

#1 Post by Pat »

People:Me

Duration:7:15am - 9:45am

Tide:HT 8:04am

Weather:Sunny, Gentle WSW but strengthening

Bait:Crab

Rigs:Running Leger

Results:1 Bass (5lb)

Catch and Release:: Yes

Report:This rock mark was just about fishable. The wind had dropped off during the night so while there was a swell it wasn't as big as the past few days. Conditions seemed ideal for this kind of fishing as the sea was very coloured. However, my bait was limited. A crabing trip the previous day produced 4 softies and 2 peelers, all of good size. I baited up with the biggest softy first. In fact it was probably more of a crispy. I lobbed it out 5/10 yards in hopeful anticipation. Bite detection was going to be difficult with the surge and undertow of the swell. Was the gentle pull on the line a bite or the undertow? Was the slack line a fish picking up the bait or the surge? Within minutes I had what seemed like a pluck, and then another gentle pluck. I struck, and lo and behold I was into a fish. This fish gave a good account of itself and when landed weighed in just under 5lbs. What a good start. I rebaited with a softy and cast out again. Over the next two hours I had a few more gentle bites. However, on striking I failed to connect. I did foul hook a goby or whatever. My knowledge of mini-species wouldn't be great. I've attached a pic. Sorry about the quality. Would be interested if someone could identify. Its quite possible that it was from these I was getting the bites. With that early fish I was hopeful that it was going to be a cracking bass session. What harm - not a bad outing all the same.
