GPS data

Hi all

I was just wondering about this before i buy, with the type of handheld gps units like the garmin 72,76 or gpsmap 60 is there any other way to add coordinate data without using software through your pc.

ie can you punch in coordinates on the hand unit, or do you have to use the pc?

anyone know

Hi Adam,

Can't answer your question for definite but the Garmin manuals give a godd indication of functionality. You might find the answer there:

Looks the the GPS 72 will let you create a new waypoint by entering coordinates directly. You could then navigate to that waypoint. I have an eTrex and that functionality seems similar. The other models are probably similar.

cool thanks for that, does the etrex have that function? so you can just enters the ords by hand and then get an arrow and distance?

in that case an e trex might be an option too, which model do you have

You can manually enter coordinates (waypoints) or save your current position. Once entered or saved you can then GOTO any position. Using a pc is actually a step up from the norm.

The 72 has a bigger screen than the etrex and as such is probably better in a boat. If you can try wire for external battery as they can be tough enough on AA's.

I have the eTrex Venture. Yes, you can enter coordinates for new waypoints. As Jim said, though, you may be better with something with a bigger screen. The eTrex is (small) mobile phone sized.

According to the specs on the website, however, most of the eTrex models have a higher resolution screen than the 72. Might be worth considering, depending on your eyesight!!

The 76 appears to have a higher resolution than the eTrex so, cobmined with the bigger screen, should have the best of both worlds.

In case you ever do need to hook it up to mapping software, I can recommend OziExplorer.

It has excellent support for lots of GPS models. It's a good way to maintain Waypoint databases.
