Duration:2 days

Tide:Going in and out

Weather:Very mixed although on the whole not too bad

Bait:Lug, ragworm, mackerel, sandeel, peeler, mackerel

Rigs:Various

Results:Bass, flounder, plaice, corkwing wrasse, ballan wrasse, mackerel, launce, gilthead bream, pollock, coalfish

Catch and Release:: Yes except macs

Report:Still recovering from a 48hr fishathon :) Two lads came down from Bangor on Friday evening loaded with every conceivable bait imaginable. First stop was to the Rosscarbery area where flounder and a single gilthead(Davy the lucky git) were brought ashore. Loads of fish in the water and plenty of bites but proved very difficult to stike. Not long after dawn on Saturday morning we were on the first bass mark. It didn't dissapoint and five bass were landed along with a few big launce. Abu rocket, kilty catcher and maria kiss were the successful lures.

Back to the house for a bit of breakfast and then more gilthead hunting around Clonakilty. Proved very quiet although I managed to fall on the rocks cutting the crap out the right hand, blood everywhere and Davy near fainted :lol: . Back to Rosscarbery after this but weed everywhere made it difficult (estuaries are full of it this year)so after a short while back to the house for dinner and then on to Garretstown direction.

Tried a rock mark first and although we seen fish none actually hit the lures. Lovely evening though as the sun came out and the wind dropped. Tried the small beach at Garretstown as the light went but alas the baits remained untouched although Ronald had an almighty scrap with a ball of weed :wink:

Back to Rosscarbery next morning and more flounder and plaice to small baits. Few bream bites missed also before we move to rock marks around Galley Head. Mackerel & pollock chasing fry everywhere here, for at least two hours shoals swam up and down past us and it was simply a matter of throwing out jigs and winding them in, had plenty of pollock double shots too. Rag baits on the bottom took a succession of wrasse up to 3 1/2lb, at least 30 landed and a pair of corkwings to Ronalds rod provided a bit of diversity.

Headed straight from here to another bass mark and as the light went Davy took another two bass including one on a popper. We all got hits and follows but as it started to rain that was the last of the action. Crap to be back at work this morning but I think the two boys were going to try for a bass again before beginning the 8 hour journey home. Ronald took some pics which I'm sure he'll stick in when they get back.

sounds like some good sport nice to get a variety of fish and fish different types of mark in a fishathon :) well done lads get them pics up :D

It was a great weekend's fishing ,and the craic was great ,though i'm sure pete's head was turned listening to davy and i taking the p!@# out of each other :lol:
I cant thank pete enough for showing us around and putting us up for the weekend , heres a few pics of some of the action .

Fantastic weekend,i started it with a new species and ended it with a personal best,what more can i say. :D thanks again pete and i look forward to the next time.

Was a fun weekend and whilst we had no big bass, aside from a few follows, the fishing still wasn't bad. Lads we'll have to do the same in Donegal when i head north again.

Ronald I could not let this story go untold either.....the three of us were fishing Garretstown on Sat night....Ronald struck a slack liner and proceeded to fight a very good fish....the battle commenced and for five mintues a good to'ing and fro'ing ensued. Myself and Davy stood waiting in the surf as Ronald huffed & puffed with the beast whilst simultaneously telling us how big he thought it was. At this stage it had entered the surf so we shone our head lights to see could we see it....whereupon Ronald shouts, "It doesn't like the light, its running, its running....turn of the bloody lights!" So we did.

Another five mintues pass and the beast beaches itself with an incoming wave, there laying breathless on the sand is about 5 kilos of kelp :shock: :lol: Cue an unmerciful slagging for poor Ronald, the first man to catch a kelp ball with an aversion to light :lol:

I was waiting for that to come out ,I think I'll take up weed fishing as you can get a great fight from it in the surf :oops: had it twice near the beach before the undertow took it back out and along the beach ,was good fun on the carp rod :lol: even our shore angling expert guide from the magazines thought it was a fish as well :lol:
Hows the hand by the way pete ,you still getting people to open bottles for you ?

lol, sounded like great craic lads. cool pictures. some very big wrasse taken.
I once reeled in a plastic bag thinking it was a huge flattie. lol

The weed fish moment at Garretstown was def the comic highlight of the weekend.Fortunatley i managed to go the whole weekend without any embarrassing moments :D

Cheers Seaniebo,i`d love to have caught a bigger one and sample their fighting ability.I missed quite a few very good bites which i think were giltheads but they seem to be difficult to hook.I`ll be down again in august so i might give them another go. :)
