BAD ASS BOAT RODS

On the look out for two boat rod classes

1. 20-30lb class

2. 50lb+ class

Been wrecking my head for a good setups the last couple of weeks and have been round a few shops to get the feel of things.

Nothing ive saw really got the juices flowing although the fladen maximus range looked pretty impressive extremley light and thin but in their 60-100lb class rods theres no way a reel in that class would suit the rod.

Today i purchased a light penn outfit at a real good price always have been a fan of penn gear but was a bit appreshensive of the gti range didnt look up to the job but the offer was to good to miss.

It was the 6-12lb power stick matched with the 310gti, mono and braid.

Would probley stay with penn for the 20-30lb class but as for the big gear im still unsure. Have thought about the abu big game reels. I need something thats gona (haul ass) fit for anything thats thrown at it

ANY IDEAS????

For starters get rig of that 310 monster off that peach of a 6-12lb fit it up with a 525 or 535 penn nothing bigger and load it with 30lb braid.
put the 310 on the 20-30lb rod

sl 30 will handle most situations,, i have great craic with the solid c,s from mackeral to tope with emgreat fun all together

what do you need 50lb class for? This video shows even blue shark can easily be landed with 20lb class tackle

I would agree 100% with jw, 20lb is ample, most guys who use 50class tackle go way overgunned for what they're chasing.

Does any1 know the figures for lb classes... i mean what weight could a 6-12lb rod hold etc...

Today sorted the 20-30lb class again sticking with penn the powerstick and 320gt2 loaded with 30lb mono and again our tackle shops can beat uk mailorder. And lucky enough i fell in with a tasty 2nd hand 6/0 senator just after being loaded with 60lb mono, she's a beast!! pure winch!!

I want a 50lb class for deep water and big fish and the senator is certainley fit for the job. It was bought for skate im not that far from where they are taken every year up to 200lb and sometimes 2-3lb of lead is needed to hold the bottom, think that justify's a 50lb setup. Plus i love the big penns every see JAWS!!

The 6-12lb power stick will be used for mackeral and jellys for pollack etc

The 20-30lb stick will be used for general boat fishing

So the question is now what rod is gona suit the 6/0 tried a couple today only one i thought that matched it was an ugly stick any other ideas.

You could always use the 6/0 for winching the boat up onto the trailer :D

if the line is 60lb mono, assuming you are proficient at knotting then you could have a strength of say 55lb. why don't you get 55 pounds of scrap iron and see if you can wind it in with the reel? All this stuff is manufactured to catch anglers not fish. :lol:

The way your sounding jw u'd think you were buying it and having to use it.

I got the 6/0 cause i wanted a 6/0 when i get a skate i'll post up a photo then you might understand why i got the reel. Why you hate them so much did one come off a rod and break your big toe! :lol:

i've never caught a 200lb skate, or any skate so maybe im wrong.

Even a 50lb conger is beaten with a rod pull at the tip of maybe 5lbs maximum, and even this is notsustainable by the angler for long periods.

if you had time with your new, rig put say 10lbs of lead in a bucket and see if you can wind it up?

Penn Senator 6/0???Thats one ancient reel...There a lot of other reels on the market that capable for the job....i mean for a 200 lb skate which is more fun to use,light,2 speed,lever drag....unless its a 200 lb YFT or BF tuna then its gonna be another story....if u fishing for deep water and really big fish....why dont get something which is light with braid?? 60lb mono....even with 3-4 lb sinker u wont be able to hold bottom with 60lb mono if the current is really strong.....ands its gonna be a helluva job to crank that just to check on bait in deep water....if u want a reel winch for deep water....an electric reel is just the answer.....that 6/0 if not mistaken is design for trolling tuna or any billfish.Btw its just my oppinion from experience and observation....as for the rods,go look for anything with a spiral wrap guide so u dont need extra power to hold them from twisting when fighting the skate or get ur self a nice gimball or harness...cheeerrrsss....

Alastair, now that you've committed to the 6/0 I would match it to a straight 50lb class rod [ the Ugly Stik is asw good as any, and better than some] and keep it for big skate, nothing else. You should be able to pick up a second hand one fairly cheaply as its much too heavy for anything else.
For shark or conger I would tend to go for a 30-50lb rod matched to a 4/0 or possibly something like one of the new generation super braid reels like the Daiwa Saltist. I, personally, have given up on reels without levelwinds but, if it doesn't bother you go for it.
Finally, despite the name, I would be very wary of using any ABU BG reel with line over 30lb bs.

Took a while to decide on a rod for the senator but having the rest of the gear penn wanted to keep it that way

Mailordered a GLD 50lb IGFA rated rod should suit the reel nicely big n' beautiful.

Now all i need is the warrior to arrive just before the summer holidays and im sorted :wink:
