whitewater, malahide, 7/6/7

#1 Post by jw »

People: jd donogh jw

Duration: 1900 till 2330

Tide: lw 2300

Weather: fine and calm

Bait: mackerel, frozen peelers

Rigs: tope rings, pulley rig

Results: tope, thornback ray, dozen doggies, loads of mackerel

Report: I had seen thick shoals of mackerel out on the bennet bank on tuesday so decided to head for there in the hope that johnny tope might not be far behind. Decided to anchor up rather than drifting, which hadn't worked on tuesday. The sea was alive with mackerel. Almost immediately jd hooked into something big which made a few good runs. Eventually a tope around 40lb came to the surface. Didn't want to gaff it so made some clumsy attempts to rig a tailer, but the tope wasn't having any of it. Donogh went out on the bathing platform got one hand unto its tail, but couldn't get it in...then the wire trace broke. jd looked as sick as a parrot. It takes a week to get over something like that! I got another small tope and a 10lb thornback after that. Sorry for messing up that tope john

Well done on the tope lads, that ray looks decent too. Serious hard lines JD on the "one that got away..." Unlucky, I'd be absolutely gutted myself.
Fluff chucking is the new black..... Rampant Wreckfish is a fly angler in denial :D
