Hi Maris, welcome to SAI. Your best bet would be to start off by doing a search of the boards on the areas you would like to fish or the types of fish you would like to catch. Have a read through the guides on the home page of the site and then from there ask your questions. Plenty of lads here will be more than willing to give you a helping hand, all you have to do is ask.
Best of luck.
Best of luck.

Hi maris
tips............
ok first you need a fishing rod !!! :D
if you are an adult male I suggest that you get a 12ft rod that is able to cast 3-6 oz weights. this will do for your regular fishing that you see people normally doing the cast out rest the rod against something and sit down
this kind of rod is used to catch everything from dogfish pollock mackeral flounder and the like.
alternatively you could get a spinning rod which is lighter cast in the range 1-3 oz spinning involves using an artificial lure that looks like a fish and you cast it out and reel it back in repeatedly a fish sees it, chases it and is hooked
you could also use this rod for float fishing in rocky areas.
next reels:
beginners should always buy fixed spool reels for the 12ft get something that can take line of 20 lb breaking strain
for spinning something that takes 10lb line.
knots: actually you need about 3 knots for most fishing
1 knot to attach your line to the spool of the reel
1 knot to join 2 pieces of line together
1 knot to tie line to a hook, weight or swivel
there are plenty of websites about for these so you just buy some line and hooks and swivels and start tying them together and that is how you learn that.
hooks:
the size of hooks varies with the species you are fishing for and the bait you are using. for general fishing i would use 1/0 sized aberdeens.
shock leader::
this is very important. When casting there is a big stress put on the line which could break sending you weight flying off through somebodys car window (or indeed their head!) so normally a length of stronger line is tied to the end of your reel line to connect with you terminal tackle (hooks and weight etc).
rigs: loads of different types easiest to make are paternoster type rigs so start with those using 3 way swivels to for the droppers.
hope this answers some of your questions

Also have a look through the links on the left side of the home page at the species, bait and tackle guides. Plenty of info there for you to read through and maybe you'll be able ask more specific questions and get much better answers. And don't be afraid to ask anything as we all had to start at some stage and it can be confusing.

Welcome to the site.
I found this guide very helpful when I took up fishing again last year;

It's a very good starting point.
Best of luck!
