What's the story with netting???

Quick question about the above...Went for a walk down along Blackrock village(Cork) today and noticed 2 guys out laying and checking nets.Now i know where they were netting is where there is a run of salmon and large shoals of mullet(some big fish as well :shock: ).But i'm not sure if this is legal or not???? Whats the story????

I'd say report it to the SWFB anyway. Let them decide if its legal or not.

Good idea teacher ,just found the sticky on useful contact numbers on the Angling news,issues page...there were a couple of people watching wondering the same thing as myself (thinking netting like this had been banned but weren't sure) :? :?

I'd go with Teacher on that one. Report it, and let the SWFB decide. If you hear any news let us know.

From my experience emails are a waste of time for this. Phone call is the way to go. I also found a very poor response by ringing the local office, if any at all. By far the best way to go is get the number for one of your local bailiff's and contact him/her directly.

The fishieries boards need information immediately (or ideally in advance) to act on it.

In practice, from what I've been told, they need to catch someone in posession of illegal fish. Apart from that, there isn't a lot they can do.

OK got my first reply from the CFB...a Myles Kelly responded thanking me for my e-mail etc. and saying this could well be an illegal netting,and he would foreward my e-mail on to the swfb,in addition i also e-mailed the swfb to clear up the situation on the subject (if it's legal to net this area or not :? ).
I have to say that Mr.Kelly was very quick to respond :) .i know alot of guys think these guys are about as useful as a eunuch in a house of ill repute :D .But i'll give them the benefit of doubt until I'm proved otherwise(naive ,maybe but we'll see :) )
By the way thanks for the replys lads,Coaster if i can get local numbers i think that would be the way to go alright.

I'm fairly sure that I know who they are and you can be sure that the authorities know them as they do this every year and make a mint out of it. The problem is as teacher said, catching them in possession. These men have a lot of practice and experience at this unfortunately.

Hi G. Wyse,

Myles Kelly is the webmaster of the CFB website so he replies to all e-mails very promptly.

At a guess I would think the reason the SWRFB haven't replied promptly is probably because they are inundated with reports about this perfectly legal & licensed by the SWRFB salmon "draft net" fishermen being mistaken for poachers :oops:

They have fished this traditional salmon fishery for several generations :wink:

Some of the draft nets men are actually members of the board of the S.W.R.F.B.

Fair enough on guys who are there legit but it would help if they could clear up any misunderstandings(not sure if there is a way of clarifying this).
Like i said i wasn't the only one watching this that was wondering if it was legal.

There is a simple way to identify a draft net boat!

All the boats have their draft net license numbers painted clearly on the bow something like "C999" not to be mistaken for a commercial sea fishing license which is very similar.

The SWRFB could not possibly clarify anything unless they send out a patrol to investigate each allegation. Can you imagine the costs involved if they had to act on each report! And it would really p.... off salmon anglers because their license fee would increase big time to cover the costs.

A poacher will never fish in the hours of daylight in a place like Blackrock. A seasoned poacher could take a fish from your line without drawing your attention to himself :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:
