Dear all,

myself and a few friends are planning a trip down to Ballyreen or Blackhead for a spot of ray fishing over the next few weeks. i was just wondering if any of you would have any info on the area like is it fishing at the moment and what baits work best.

any info would be appriciated.

have heard that there dogs and a few ray being caught there at the moment.. mackerel are also around so good chance of fresh bait(but bring some just in case).. also heard that there have been a couple of nice congers pulled up 20+lbs

as for tackle shops.. only one i know of is further up the coast at fanore(beside the post office) they also sell bait(usually good quality)

mack and sandeel have never failed me there :D

nice one mate any recommondations on tackle. was think of one hook pullies to get fish in over the rough ground close in? also dont know what strenght snoods to used as i heard that there are a few bull huss which might wear the snood a little???

pulley's will be fine.. 25lbs snood if your going for the big uns..

be prepaired to lose tackle..

a good cast will put u onto sand. u'll get flats here too amongst ray and dogs... 3 hooks clipped as far as u can. sandeel is as good as anything.

steve you state to use 25lb hook snood for the bull huss :o do you use that b/strain all the time i thought huss have pretty sharp teeth so @ least 50lb snoods for the bigger huss :shock: as i,m coming over to kilkee in sept so any info will be great thanx Paul

they are just overgrown doggies really.. never had a problem with them biting through the snood, they more rasp at it than bite it, so if you use only 15lbs snood after the first huss the chances of landing a second one on the same snood is reduced.. whereas 25lbs snood seems to keep their little jaws at bay(same with thornies), well these are my findings any way...

increasing snood to 50lbs i reckon you will lose other potential fish species as well..

i would go with a 2 hook clipped as far as you can throw it. 30lb snood. mack and sandeel all you will ever need.

i have nothing to add..just mack+sandeel are the baits..i would use a pully rig with 2/0 hooks

agreed. 25lb snoods should be fine for most species and a good chioce for general fishing.

I've had this argument before. Yes you'll get huss in on light snoods as the hook is often in the in the mouth. A decent huss if it gets mono in its mouth it will bite through. I've seen a 5lb huss bite clean through 80lb mono on the shore. When using a penel huss often take the top hook leaving mono directly near the nasher. If huss are big doggies try putting your fingers down their mouth.

i often do.. have multiple witnesses :shock: sometimes the only way to get a hook out :shock:

Meant to have smiley on that. I didn't mean it as a dig. A big huss has fair teeth and I've had viking hooks crushed up by their choppers. I wouldn't recommend anyone to put their fingers in their mouth as they can and have done damage. Them Galway huss must be whimps.

I lost a very decent huss last December when it was being landed with a swell after it bit through 80lb mono. My go at it is my 2/0s usually have 25lb to 30lb mono where a variety of fish could be picked up and my 4/0s where I'm definately after big fish have 60lb mono.

i recently tied up a few rigs for use off of the boats using 100lb line, went so heavy cos u never no wat else will show up when using big mack baits and also if the fish are coming thick and fast you dont want to have to worry about line damage

after unhooking 8 doggies the last day my fingers are nice and cut! it was the only way to get the hook out!

i used to have a hook dislodder i got free with the sea angler it was great for getting the hooks out without cutting your fingers. all you had to do was slide it onto the line down to the hook push and twist and the hook would come out.

i lost the poxy thing but.
