35 have been caught so far this year by kayakfishermen at the mark :shock:biggest so far is 50lb

Hi Richi,

Just a question tope fishing from a yak, First of all I have 12lb class rods, big multipliers, 15lb main line, 80lb rubbing trace (5') and 18 inches 40lb wire trace with a 6/0 hook all ready and waiting to have a go. But!

And here's the question " What can I expect to happen once hooked up "
I'll be at anchor so will have to release this to be picked up after, but what is the fight like and how long does it normally last and how far will I be towed :lol:.

12lbs class rod and 15lbs main line could = broken rod if your unlucky

bring your passport.. when you end up in florida you might not be too keen on paddling back...

now that is a fight i would like to see..
i'd say any tope hauling a kayak about would tire it after quite a while...

i wonder if you tied/towed a bucket behind you would it help tire the fish faster or would it hinder the fight???

now there's and idea for all ye yakkers :idea:

Was thinking something similar myself Steve......... Something like a mini drogue, to help give you more weight when fighting the fish. I guessing that you will be towed a few hundred yards at most. I think the 12lb class rod will do fine as you will not be abole to put more pressure on with a heavier rod anyway as you will be using your body & Yak weight to tire the fish.

Knew that gut of mine would come in handy :lol: I do use a small drogue that I clip to the back of the yak just 5' behind me with a lenght of paracord attached to the end and clipped onto the yak beside which enables me to collapse it really quickly and store it in the rear tankwell. That idea could work!

I must be really lucky then because I've caught loads of Tope and Conger on 12lb class rods

Expect the thrill of a lifetime,we all set the drag with the clicker on and it screams when they take off!We stay at anchor but expect to be pulled around in various directions,(better to use a 1.5kg as opposed to the .75kg).One of the lads let go of his anchor last year and was towed over a mile.The fight can last around 10 minutes,and they will make continual runs during this period.Not one for beginners!Don't forget that we target them in a group and that help is only a short paddle away

Thanks Richi,

I probable would have released the anchor only for you're reply , won't be doing that even though a mile wouldn't put me out of the way as I've paddled up to 8 miles on one session. I have a 1.5kg anchor as I couldn't find a .75 locally so that will do.

Hopefully I can find one to take now! Going out 2morrow fingers crossed but the mark may not hold to many tope may need to move to another.

Great advice Richi.

Tope are caught all along the Wicklow / North Wexford Shore during the summer. I'm guessing anywhere from 500 yards plus from the shoreline. I don't know any marks myself, but maybe someone on the site can help there. You need to try locate the gulleys in the sandbars. From what I know (which is very little :D) the tope hunt in these gulleys.

Mackerel flappers are the bait of choice. I might be tempted to give it a try myself over the summer.

Just a small addition--I use 30lb mainline,have lost a few Congers before with 15lb so don't use it any more :wink:
