Portsalon Co Donegal

Hi folks, I was thinking of heading up towards Portsalon in Donegal soon to wet a line :shock: I was wondering if there has been any catch reports from that area over recent times. I've never fished it and was wondering if anyone could give me a few pointers on where to fish from the beach? :oops:

I believe it can be very good on it's day, thornies, dogs and flats etc. Don't worry, all fish caught, if any, will be released unharmed! :wink:

As usual all replies welcome. If anyone fishes it regularly and doesn't want to tell all then don't be afraid to PM me.

funny iwas just about ot put up a similar post cause the clubs fishing it and ive never been to it let alone fished it.

If I were going to this area I would go about 15 mls more to Fanad, the north side of the lighthouse for rough ground and the south side for flats .

Hi jg, when you say flats do you mean flounder or ray etc. Is it an out and out rough ground mark or is it more mixed ground? :shock: I believe it's a bit of a tramp to the lighthouse/place to fish. :shock: Can anyone confirm if this is true? Would it be best fished with rough ground rigs/tackle etc or am I reading too much into jg's posting?

Theres sand within 20 yards or so Norfolk. Rough in the margins. Not sure as to how far the "proper" route to it is as we nipped through the lighthouse as it appeared deserted. Not that I recommend that to anyone, I was with a local at the time and that is the route he took me. By flats, rays most definitely included.

Thanks for the info Petekd, do you have any info on the beach at Portsalon? eg. Where to fish on it too get the best sport?

Sorry to be a pain with all these question but for me to travel to Portsalon it will take approx 3 - 3.5hrs and I want to make sure I give it the best shot to produce fish for me.

Low water is best if your after the thornbacks mate, I'd leave the Swilly until June/July though as it seems to peak around then for flats/rays/gurnards etc
Sea Species(25) bass, codling, whiting, turbot, seatrout, stingray, pollock, coalfish, longspine scorpion, ballan wrasse, dogfish, ling, pouting, poor cod, dab, mackerel, smelt, sandeel, launce, bull huss, painted ray, thick lip mullet, golden grey mullet, rock goby.
Fresh Water (2) brown trout, sea trout

Was at Fanad for a drive last week and seen a few lads fishing the left hand side of the Lighthouse. They said they had been stopped from going through the lighthouse grounds.
A short time later a helicopter landed so this may have been why there were stopped from entering the Lighthouse property. I also noticed that the fence along the path to the right of the lighthouse where anglers used to cross to get to the mark had been replaced, and i don't suppose they would want it damaged again.
I have never been stopped, but have seen some people asked to leave that were fishing on the wee pier belonging to the lighthouse, and others that had a BBQ and fire going near to the gorse on the top of the cliff face.
I will try and find out more from a friend who would fish it regularly and let you know what i find out, as i hope to fish it myself in the summer months.
