Bait clips and impact shields!!!!

#1 Post by Breathe the o2 »

Hi lads,

I have never used bait clips or impact shields before and was just wondering how to attach them to the line and roughly how much do they cost? Cheers

hey..i regulary use both..what type of bait clips are they?? there are many differant types and some are attached differantly then others. as for the impact shield you cut a piece off rubber tubeing you get in the packet with them...from the bottom up...firstly slide up 1 crimp..then a bead then the impact sheild then the rubber. pull the rubber over the end of the impact shield and crimp it in place!

handiest ones to use are just a bit of rubber tubing and a small wire "hook" you thread a piece of tubing onto the rig body, and just slide the clip (wire hook) into the rubber tube, this holds it in place against the line.

If your not already, you need to use heavyline, 50lb+ for the rig body to get these to stay secure.

i find this sort grand, theres loads of makes selling the same thing, or you can make a load of your own for pence.

theres all sorts of other fancy ones that are bit more complicated to rig but ive never really used them bar the lead links with a built in clip

not necessarily - as the lead settles on the bottom it releases if its clipped well - as this release the tension on the line - would say make your own for starters - then at least as your losing gear etc. and getting used to tangles and the set up - your not losing a fortune!

Yeah Corby thats probably the best idea alright! Is the 1up 1down clipped rig more prone to tangle than the 1up 1down not clipped?Cause I have enough trouble with the non clipped one already

if your tying the clipped rigs yourself - you will get used to what works to stop the tangling - as long as the lenght of your snood doesnt reach the start of the next one - and your swivels move effectively - then you shouldnt have too many tangles

the clipped rigs will stop the tangles on your cast - this is the most important part - as you want your baits free - when they settle in the water

doesnt matter too much when your bringing them in - just that the neater your traces are - the less kinks youll get - and the longer theyll last you - until you crack off or hit a snag

This site shows you how to make them from electrical cable and paper clips:

Breakaway imps or impact leads are very good. Very simple to use too.

bait clips and impact shields

#13 Post by WILL »

i used to use the impact shield but have moved on to the imps which are great especially used with a flatback lead the bait sits tight behind the lead within a turbulence free zone :)

you grip your hook under the clip - and when it hits the water - the plastic part on the top of the lead - floats upwards and knocks your hook off the clip!

Are you using memory free snoods or just normal mono?
Tangling is practically a non-issue with the memory free stuff.

I normally use stuff called amnesia in varying weights, for example I have a roll here, amnesia memory free monofilament 6.8kg, 70m of line at €3.15 from Southside angling in dublin, but I've seen it up to almost a fiver.
It's worth it though, you'll hardly ever have a tangle with it unless you catch an eel or put too many beeds and bits of bling on a snood. It saves a lot of heartache. There are others but Amnesia seems to be one of the more popular brands, the other way to go is with fluorocarbon, but that's very expensive at about 4 times the price of amnesia.
