species ID please

#1 Post by thompo »

caught this wee fellow tonight, in Bangor.

no idea what he is lol, Turbot maybe purely on the size of his mouth haha, bit only touched the bottom and he wolfed down some crab on a 1/0.
hooked quite deep but no barbs so came out handy enough

it had smooth skin both sides and more oval shaped than a flounder for example, under side was pure white. he was quite thick also maybe 3/4-1"

also i think i had a tadpole fish, similar looking to a rockling, but fatter head, only 1 barb on chin and very dark almost black colouring was about 20cm

fished the back end got the tadpole on crab and a tiny sea sculpin on mack, tide was dropping dead low so went dangling off the platform and hit the topknot, pout and poor cod. the pout were the biggest ive seen, maybe about 1/2 lb good craic on a light rod with braid. all the fish were loving the crab but razor and mack seemed to work for the bigger pout

It looks like an eckstroms topknot rather than the common topknot which is a lot darker, so it's an even rarer catch... nice one.

def a common topnot.common topknot has dark bands from eyes, fins appear to join with tail fin but actually go under it, and dark spot(circled) at curve of lateral line.

jealous as hell by the way

Cheers lads :D

had no idea it was a quite rare capture lol

but i knew id never seen one before haha.

Couldnt belive the size of the mouth on the thing! It seems a lot of these smaller species, have relatively big months compared to their over all size, rockling, sea scorpions etc
