I'd like some advise on making a simple scratching rig to be used from a beach. I'm looking for something to keep a young fella occupied and get him into fishing.
I'm new to rig making so need to know what are good size hooks / snoods to use? I intend to bait with Mac / Peeler.
Appreciate any help.
thanks,
James.

Simple Scratching Rig
If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing rods.

Hey Jimbo,
I would advide a simple 2 hook flapper. Make sure the bottom hook is below the lead as this can work a bit better when fishing in close.
Use 40/50lb clear mono for the rig body. Tie on the lead clip. Then put these bit on in the correct order. You rig should look a little like it's typed below

Just remember to crimp this rig so that the top hook is a couple if inches away from the bottom small swivel.
For hooks I would use size 2 Kamasan B940's, If fishing in close as you have a chance of catching the smaller fish and for the kids any fish counts. Use 15lb Amnesia mono for the mono link between the small swivel and hook. If you don't have it, don't worry, any clear or light coloured mono will do. Try keep it to 15lb or a little heavier as it's less likely to tangle, which will mean that the little fella will not be too much hard work   For calm or very calm days you might want to use lighter mono to the hook and maybe size 4 or even size 6 hooks.
If you have any questions post away.

John, Kev, thanks for the advise. Now I got to choose booms / no booms !!
It is a good way to show the rig makeup, with this its very easy to see whats required. I'd be interested in seeing the Pulley rig one too!!

try and make me a pulley pennel version. go on its a challenge, if you can i will bring ya out for another trout and roach session and will make sure you get a 2 pounder this time :D
Pulley Pennel is easy if you get the right beads, being fox pulley beads which you can get in Southside angling here in Dublin, they're expensive though. It's a very simple rig with the right equipment.
I prefer to use Pulley beads as they don't damage the line when you hoof it out whereas the swivels I find can not to mention if you really whack it out, you can snap the line.

The simplest way by far is with the pulley bead and this rig assumes that you are using a high poundage line straight through. This particular gemini genie rig clip has the lip on it for clipping baits down, it's the only application that I've found for them so far.

It's the second one on that page that you're looking for.
If you can't get the beads then you should change it slightly
