common or strap conger

Hi Lads

i need a bit of help with this one i caught an eel of bray pier yesterday it was 68 cm long light brown on top and was very slimy i have a pic but i have to try and down load it later

i think it was an ordinary eel but im not sure i know that with out a pic it might be hard to tell but ill put it up as soon as i can

one easy way to figure which is which..

with conger the dorsal fin begins about level with the end of the pectoral fins..

whereas with common/freshwater eel the dorsal fin begins well back from the pectoral fins..

at a guess id say conger, but have a look at the pics in the galleries and see if it looks like any of those

i would say it was a fresh water eel (silver eel) they are quite common there, a typical conger is dark navy (although you can get albino conger) and i would have to disagree with paul for the sake of it,

I would have said freswater myself...the colour to me sounds like a freshwater eel plus the harbour is at the mouth of a river which would make it more than likely its a freshwater eel! Congers are sometimes caught here but freshwater eels are more prolific here...but then again i could be wrong! picture should be able to sort it out :)

If it looks like the one here then chances are it's a freshwater eel, I had this one off Greystones beach a short while ago.

its my local harbour and i feel like i have fished it at least 100 times and have never caught an eel where u fishing inside the harbour by any chance :?: there are lots of rockling outside the wall some nights they drive u crazy
